Stem Cell Therapy for Rotator Cuff Tears or Arthritis

Posted by peterauen @peterauen, Feb 15, 2017

I understand that the Mayo Clinic Sports Medicine Department offers stem cell therapy for patients with rotator cuff tears. Where can I learn more about this procedure and decide if I am possibly a candidate for such a procedure? I am 74 years old and have been diagnosed with a total rotator cuff tear. Thank you.

Hello @peterauen, welcome to Connect. Thank you for posing the question regarding stem cell treatments and shoulders. We have active discussions taking place on Connect regarding stem cells treatments for knees and hips, but this brings up a great point.

Mayo Clinic hosted an hour long webinar all about stem cells. A Mayo Clinic member posted a question about that shoulders:

"Will this work for shoulders?"

Answer: "Yes, we currently perform treatments on the shoulder. If you would like to seek consultation at Mayo Clinic, call 612-313-0520 for our Minneapolis location or 507-266-9100 for our Rochester location. You can also visit our Regenerative Medicine Consult Service page for more information: http://mayocl.in/1Ag7duN."

@peterauen, is this the information you were looking for? Have you seen a physician regarding your rotator cuff and what information did they give you?

Hello Justin,Yes, the information you provided is what I am looking for.  I want to learn more about the stem cell treatments that the Mayo Clinic performs for shoulder injuries.I have seen an orthopedic surgeon in Arizona for a rotator cuff tear.  I winter in Arizona and spend my summers in Minnesota.  The surgeon told me I have a complete rotator cuff tear and indicated that a shoulder replacement would likely result in the best outcome.  I heard of a stem cell treatment for certain shoulder problems but I do not know if the treatment is used for rotator cuff tears.  That is what I want to learn more about.  I have Xrays and a MRI that was done recently.  I did look at part of the webinar, but I am specifically interested in treatments for the problem I have, a complete rotator cuff tear.  Any additional information you can provide would be most appreciated.Thank you,Pete Rauen

I am glad to hear that information helped you. I am not a medical professional and cannot offer medical advice, however, I would recommend using the information in my previous post to call and ask your questions. You can also use this link for information on a second opinion, http://mayocl.in/1mtmR63.

Hello @jpdunlap, and welcome to Connect. Are you asking if there are return appointments for Mayo Clinic's Regenerative Medicine or just for stem cell therapy in general? If you are curious about Stem Cell therapy treatment at Mayo Clinic, or anywhere else, I recommend calling the following number, 844-276-2003, or going to the following website http://www.mayo.edu/research/centers-programs/center-regenerative-medicine/patient-care/clinical-trials.

The consult service should be able to better answer your questions about stem cell therapy. @jpdunlap, if you don't mind sharing, do you have issues with your shoulder or are you just wondering about stem cells?

I've had surgery on left shoulder. Now the orthopedic surgeon said my right shoulder is worse. Bone on bone. He has recommended a complete shoulder replacement. I'm getting a second opinion Wednesday. I know of someone else who had stem cell. Trying to keep my options open. I do not really want to have complete replacement.

I've had the same diagnosis. One Orthopedist said I need shoulder replacement. I got a second opinion and the Orthopedist said I didn't need shoulder replacement. I do have intermittent shoulder pain which is a nuisance. I'm getting a cortisone shot tomorrow. Doctor said I could have it done four times a year. My internist says that some data suggest platelet rich injections can help with shoulder osteoarthritis. I may have that done first since it is much less expensive than stem cell injections.

I am also 74 years old and trying to decide whether to use conventional full tear rotator cuff surgery or go with stem cell treatment. Have you had your shoulder treated yet?

REPLY

Yes I had massive rotator cuff damage and had the surgery in January. I can now lift my arm after months of therapy
