I’m reading this thread to gain info about bowel surgery. I have a family member who is having surgery today to address a blockage. I don’t know the details, but couldn’t locate a recent thread here about that. I’m terribly worried as she is in distress and is weak. Hoping and praying she’ll be ok.

Prayers for a speedy recovery for you friend and help from her surgeon to calm her anxiety.

Hi, @hopeful33250. Thanks for your kind words. To answer your question, I had 10 days of 2 different antibiotics at the same time - Ciprofloxacin hydrochloride and Metronidazole. My body is pretty resistant to antibiotics and since last time it was hard to get the infection down my doctor has been having me hit it hard to begin with. She also put me on Enterol probiotic during the course of antibiotics, then Bio-Kult probiotic for a while after I finish the antibiotics. She doesn't want it to get as serious as it did before.

Thankfully I'm gradually getting better now, just continue to eat carefully and rest a lot.

Have a great day!

I'm so glad to hear that you are feeling better, @laughterhelps. It is also great that you are eating carefully. A change in eating habits is important in recovering from diverticulitis. What type of eating plan are you following now?

@laughterhelps, @cartwrib ,

Thank you for your kind words. My aunt is in ICU and doing ok. So I am ecstatic. We’re continuing to pray for her recovery. I am so relieved at this point though I realize she has a long way to go for recovery. So grateful.

Thank you, @hopeful33250. I’m now allowed to start adding in a little of my regular fiber…starting with a T. of bran flakes into my Greek yogurt. Seems kind of funny to be excited about it, but it’s encouraging to be moving back to more normal things. 🙂

I really understand the excitement, @laughterhelps! It does make you feel good to get back to normal, doesn't it.

Hello, everyone. I’m about 2-1/2 weeks after beginning a diverticulitis flare-up, 5th day after finishing antibiotics. This is my 3rd time with diverticulitis. Have been gradually getting better—started with liquid diet then gradually adding low-residue foods, lots of water. No fever for about a week. Was very encouraged that we caught this flare early and that I’ll soon be back to a more normal diet and active life.

Today I went out in the car driven by my husband, wanted to do a little low-key shopping. While at the store the lower abdomen started clenching really badly again, felt like diarrhea with possible vomiting. Dear husband got me home quickly to bathroom and rest. Just water and the rest for the last 5 hours. I have an intermittant low fever again, varying between 99.4 and 99.1, but down to normal just now.

Has anyone else relapsed about 5 days after finishing the course of antibiotics? I’m still on the probiotics. I’m thinking of seeing how I do tonight back on the liquid diet and calling the doctor in the morning if I’m not better. Or should I let her know right away?

Thanks for any information or encouragement!

I’m surprised that you only had to take 5 days of antibiotics. For me it’s usually 10 and if that doesn’t work they switch me to an alternate and/or order another CT just in case. Also you keep mentioning liquids. I hope you mean just CLEAR liquids, as awful as they are. Don’t fool yourself that a little cream soup won’t hurt. It might.
Good luck to you! I’ve been there - it’s no fun.

Hello @zilla.

When I wrote that post it was 5 days after I finished the full 10-day course of antibiotics as prescribed by my doctor. And yes, I started out on clear liquids. Back when I had my first flare my doctor had given me full instructions on the diet, and this was my 3rd flare-up so none of it was new to me. I was just concerned that I started having some trouble again so soon after finishing the prescribed antibiotics and thinking I was on the road to (slowly) getting better. Thankfully I am much better now. Still being cautious but have incorporated more fiber, which feels more normal and allows for more nutritious variety.

All the best to you.
