Is it possible to stay off bone drugs altogether

Wondering if it is possible to stay off bone drugs altogether by taking bone supplements, working out with weights, walking and a bone healthy diet?

Yes, bone drugs. I used Calcitonin, Forteo & Fosamax. All increased bone density, but with more problems : developed allergy to Calcitonin, increased fractures & dental issues with latter 2.
That is not to discourage drug use—I had early onset osteoporosis diagnosed in 20s (undiagnosed celiac causing malnutrition & low estrogen), which means I never laid down normal bone density, plus I began to shed bone in my 30s with early menopause. My point is that osteoporosis treatment generally follows a cookie cutter, high insurance-paying formula —works for most women, but not every woman. Also lots of medical quacks & scammers ready to capitalize on women’s fear of aging, drug therapy, conventional medicine!
Just keep asking questions, relying on other women’s experiences (like this forum) & your own body.

Sorry to hear what you have gone through. I couldn't agree more with what you said about osteoporosis treatment in general. The more I read and research and the more I hear from other women about their drug experiences, the more I don' t want to go on bone drugs. There is no guarantee that I won't fracture on a bone drug. Thank you for your comment.

That is wonderful you did not have any side effects on the drugs and that you had bone gain. Why were you on so many different ones if you had bone gain on each one?

What happens now, can you go off the drugs? Will the bone gain remain?

I am not willing to risk losing any of my gains by ceasing meds. For instance if I stopped prolia i would have the prolia rebound effect. Without a followup drug after evenity I would have risks after so much gain. I am 77 and would rather risk having some of the possible side effects rather than risking compound fractures.

Thank you for the information; however the problem is that they can say what ever they want

There are studies that show that collagen peptides have been helpful for bone density. It's not a miracle cure, of course. It can help, but you'd have to be doing other things as well.

2 shots(one year) of prolia. I am not ready to be on prolia for the rest of my life and since I am 77 will consider one infusion of reclast to avoid prolia rebound. Then evenity. At that point I may be more comfortable with prolia til death.

Hi Everyone,
I am new to this subject. I have been diagnosed with Osteopenia, but a Town Event lately had a set up station and they dx me with osteoporosis. I have had many bone fractures in the last 10 years, including one when I just turned around from my driver's seat to move something in the back seat. 6 months to heal!
Anyway, many fractures of wrists, hands, toes, ribs, much pain and disability.
Any ideas for help? Also I am 85 and in relative good health: normal weight, active, lots of PT any time I break something. Do dental fractures have any relation to this problem?
I would appreciate any advice - thank you!
Margot

I think living to 85 is a great accomplishment, especially if you have had multiple fractures. I really like some of the answers here, especially about educating yourself and making a decision based ON YOUR OWN experiences and weighing risks versus reward when it comes to medication. Since you asked, IF I WAS 85, like yourself, i would NOT go on any osteoporosis medications. I would concentrate on exercise (weight bearing, walking, resistance), proper diet, fall prevention, and supplements.

I'm following and very interested in this question. I'm in treatment for prostate cancer including 2 1/2 years on ADT (androgen deprivation therapy). Just came off this last month and just had my first Dexa scan. The results are -1.0 and -1.3 in the femur/hip and -2.2 in the lumbar spine. I'm interested in how to improve/slow osteopenia without medications. The side effects of drugs like Prolia scare me. What can I do with supplements and exercise? What's worked for you? I'm also interested if anyone is using some sort of back support/brace to improve posture/height.
