RSV vaccine

Posted by naiviv @naiviv, 3 days ago

Has anyone decided to get a RSV vaccine? My doctor told me that it would be wise to get it but honestly I am so afraid to get more shots. I got the Covid shots and unfortunate I was sick the whole month of last December with Covid. The RSV has only been in the market 3 years now I believe but I don’t hear of people getting it. As a matter of fact I am not getting more Covid shots. I read that 15 new mRNA Covid shots will be in the market soon and they are dangerous. So if anyone has decided to receive the RSV I would like to know if possible, if side effects showed up. For so many decades Pharma research has been looking into finding a Cancer vaccine, a Muscular dystrophy vaccine, an Alzheimer’s vaccine and none of those companies have found anything to cure or protect us against those diseases. So how come a Virus so contagious as Covid, which still researchers are studying because they don’t actually know how this virus generates, resulted in the manufacture of Covid vaccines in less than 1 year? How did that happen? Pfizer, Moderna, Johnson & Johnson had the Covid shots ready….. How about RSV? What is your opinion about it? Thanks in advance

I got the RSV vaccine about a year ago, when I first heard about it. I'm very glad I did. I'm a scientist with a Ph.D. and my recommendation would be to follow the scientific evidence, not what people say they think the evidence says. Who is your own scientific professional? Your physician. Follow the advice and recommendations of your MD.

Agree with much of the above, if your doctor/pharmacist/primary care provider recommended it, probably good for you to consider.
(Especially if you meet the CDC guidelines for vulnerable* older adults and/or you are around children who may be vulnerable to RSV. *cardiovascular disease, obesity, diabetes, lung disease, liver disease, and others which you might review?)

(You mentioned research on vaccines for cancer and Alzheimers, not sure I ever heard of such research so perhaps it was very preliminary pilot studies in animals? How interesting to think vaccination might be considered beyond viral and bacterial infections! Perhaps you are referring to the association between being vaccinated and not getting Alzheimers? Certainly true as an association, but just an association - people who are vaccinated tend not to get Alzheimers, however they may also be avoiding Alzheimers and chronic diseases because of other good health choices (nutrition and exercise for example).

As is true of "gloaming" above, I have had many vaccinations, also deployment for disaster relief.
I have not had Covid or any serious infection in 40 years, and thankfully have avoided chronic diseases listed above. I will listen to my primary care provider this fall though, we'll see what prevention is recommended. 🙂

Best wishes

I agree! The vaccines are not meant to always do what they say they will. The thing that bothered me was the fact that the Covid vaccine was misrepresented to the public just about everything. alot of people who were working in the medical field. I know a Pandemic makes things a priority..that being said ask the people who have cardiac issues because of this vaccine?! My spouse for instance. RSV was mainly in NICU's and with children. We as older adults may not have the immunity to this virus. My best friend almost died from it. It has to be a personal decision. Do your research and make sure you may need it do to your history. Being informed with questions for your physician and make sure it is what you want. RSV is not something that is good to have from an elderly person as we are more susceptible to just about everything. This is just a suggestion when regarding health issues.

I'd like to see the scientific research citations that support your claims. Please, no anecdotal material. Thanks

I have, as a retired Canadian military officer, received many dozens of a wide variety of vaccines in my adult life so that I was deployable at a moment's notice, and could be expected to survive most common infections. I had all the usual vaccines, yellow fever, hepatitis, pneumonia (X2), shingles (X2), and multiple annual flu and COVID MRNA vaccines. None of them has given me more than a slightly sore muscle at the point of injection.
Vaccines do a world of good. They prevent polio, smallpox, shingles in the elderly, pneumonia, TB, measles, mumps, rubella, typhoid, yellow fever, and so on. Millions upon millions of people have gotten various vaccines for many decades now. I'd say the heavy, bloated, and rather compelling preponderance of evidence is that they are safe and effective, two qualities anyone should hope a vaccine has.
It is known that some are allergic or have other negative reactions to some of the contents of typical vaccines. Those people should be cautious and watchful. But most people will make good use of them.
I almost lost our fourth grandson to RSV. It was touch and go, but the nurses and doctors saved him. Aged people, those with compromised immune responses or with some comorbidities, should consult their doctors and follow their advice. That would be the only medical advice I will ever give on this forum... to follow the experts.

I caught Covid 4 weeks after my first lung cancer surgery. I don't know how because I was careful to avoid people. It was mild just with productive cough that went away with the anti-viral. I was grateful I was up to date on my Covid vaccine!!!
Following my Mayo doctor recommendations to protect my lungs I am up to date on flu, Covid, and have had also Shingles, RSV and pneumonia vaccines. And I avoid people who are not up to date.
Life is a risk assessment of options. In medicine I follow the advice of those I know are qualified to speak on the subject. Vaccine benefits far outweigh the risks. And a sore arm is hardly a problem.

This is my opinion and the outcomes we experienced. I am not sure where you are going with this? Please inform me if you would. I never said I am a person that knows everything! I have two family members with cardiac issues. . One of them required a pacemaker. My best friend was exposed to someone who had RSV and almost died. A actually I was the person that heard her gasping for breath . I encouraged her to go to the ER. She was in the ICU for 7 days! She also had pneumonia. Again I am only using my own experience.

I was referring specifically to your statement that the covid vaccine was misrepresented to the public.

I was not trying to offend you at all. I am not that type of person. This site is for sharing . Not a Dr.'s office.

I believe it as everyone I knew who took it ended up with Covid. Or like me I have never had it. I know flu shots and other vaccines are necessary.I just have issues with how my family was affected.

There are lots of verifiable, veridical, problems with the MRNA vaccines made for COVID-19. However, at least in Canada, it was widely disseminated that these were NOT going to prevent infection. They would help the body to respond more quickly by being sensitized to the spike proteins on the outer surface of the virus. This meant that people would not get a lot sicker before their own natural immunity wised up and realized the body was in a crisis.
Unlike other vaccines, like the Salk vaccine for polio that prevented the infection in the first place, the COVID vaccines were only ever meant to give a new host body a head start on its immune response. We're talking about a full 24 hours quicker, meaning the virus was prevented sooner from replicating in huge numbers which was what killed many people....if it wasn't follow-on infection such as pneumonia or other opportunistic diseases.
