Dealing with multiple GI issues

Posted by oliveoyl123 @oliveoyl123, Feb 7, 2024

I have been adding new diagnoses to my already numerous this past six months. My former gi dr just thru meds at me mostly. So about 11 years ago I got diagnosed with redundant colon and IBS-c (which sometimes I think is a catch-all for who knows what's wrong with you LOL) when I started following the low FODMAP diet loosely (onions and garlic are out for sure.) Two years later I had severe lower chest pain and went to ER, where I eventually diagnosed with EOE, gastritis, hiatal hernia. Put on prilosec then and still on them, top dose now. Had my colonoscopy 9 years after the first as I was having issues again and got sent to specialist colon dr as I have flat large precanerous polyps that took 3 more colonoscopies (4 in 20 months), and the last two were two day preps with two gallons prep that I could only get 1 1/4 down both times. On a yearly schedule now, sigh. I was having issues with swallowing again this past June and had another endoscopy where gi dr broke a Schatzki ring at the bottom, and showed an erosive esophagus, no EOE. I also saw a couple of ENTs shortly after as I was having vocal cord issues (from long Covid in the spring), and turns out I have LPR, and acid reflux is hitting my vocal cords. I switched to a larger practice who did three tests - ph impendence (119 weakly acidic events in 24 hours, some up to my vocal cords, on meds), esophageal motility which showed gastroparesis, and manometry which showed inefficient esophageal motility. I was too complex for them so I am being referred to a university center. I also met with a dietician who helped me figure out how to deal with these conflicting diagnoses! I am eating very little solids, granola in am (to keep me not constipated but gives me heart burn) midmorning a homemade muffin or similar, soup which I just stopped pureeing for lunch, Owyn protein drink for mid afternoon, and a smoothie for dinner. Avoiding as much acid foods and drinks as possible, only drinking alkaline water. Just wondering if anyone else has similar multiple issues. And what anyone has found that works! I am on a new med for the motility issue, bethanechol which hasn't helped much yet (bloating still bad.) And I have lost almost 30 pounds in 4 months, needed to but not sure when it will stop.

Righteo. My husband sees me distended & says you can't drink a bottle of water on an empty stomach w/o blowing out. You can't make this s☆☆☆ up in your head! I ask for a .05mg klonopin & cut that in 1/2 & doctors do not want to give any comfort. While we're eating, walking, drinking properly or when bowels 🛑 from aggressive action taken on drs part & then not telling me the pt to 🛑 taking the med, the tables turn. Who is what. & has botox signs all over his office. Great! That's what I'm in, a plastic office. I go in to have my prolapse checked & he offers a tetanus shot. Really. Whose got screws loose

Hi,
Unfortunately that sort of support has dissapeared from my wife. Now with MRI results proving there are physical reasons why I am as I am, she doesn't like egg on her face. I stopped a suicide attempt of a friend a little while ago and he is the only one who believed I am not mentally disturbed by my history.
I was begining to come around to their way of thinking as no one wanted to look deeper into my health issues, just took one interested specialist to move my case forward and get to the truth of the matter. I'm so relieved but also so very p--off with the rest of my medical team. I will be holding them all accountable in due course.
Cheers.

Hi,
Although I tend to conduct myself along christian beliefs I'm not a religious person. I have run into too many who are selfserving christians that I can't be part of. I must say I also know some who are true christians through thick and thin living the life of true christianity. I always figured I'd end up stoking the fires of hell and be warm at least!
I have found myself at the pearly white gates twice in my life and been refused admission, I'm not sure if that is being lucky or unlucky. I guess it very much depends on your perspective. I can never tell if the glass is half full or half empty, it is all the same to me, half a glass of whatever.
Maybe just dumb luck all said and done.
If it is part of the "bigger plan"I wish someone would change the plan quickly, because it is not particularly comfortable.
Take care.
Cheers

Divine intervention. I, personally do not believe in luck. I know you're not comfortable. I'm not either. Giving up meat for 30g protein drinks all day to keep muscle mass. I'm down to a dozen foods that are soft textured. Approaching this w insight that my GES was normal. It's my intestines. Redundant torturous colon. I just thank God I can prepare my food & be grateful. Hope you'll feel better soon

Hi,
Anybody that believes they are comfortable with digestive problems hasn't got serious digestive problems. I'm reasonable happy I can manage with it. Had a binge eat 3 days ago, hunger and bigger eyes than my gut got me. First time off the bread and water in over a month. Damn it felt good at the time but taking 48 hours to digest it all wasn't the best feeling going. More fool me, Christmas came early! Blew the glucose levels into orbit and the BP went with it. What the hell, I can't be goodie two shoes all the time. Now to knuckle down back to the boring diet.
I have premature muscle depletion so not worried about the muscle tone anymore. As long as I can do the things I think I can still do, I'm fine. I'm told I still have good strength for my age and excellent manipulation. My Dr believes it is down to my bloody mindedness, she is probably right. I tend to thrash my body most of the time as it allows me to forget my health issues while I'm working hard. As usual pay for it over the next few days, but that is me always pushing everything I can to the limits. Chatting on here is a help, it eases the situation a mite and restores my sanity, until next time.
Cheers

I’m new here ! Hello! I did not think about drinking high protein drinks in place of meat. I simply cannot digest any meat, I’ve come to that conclusion although my drs all say I need to eat meat for protein. None of them listen. BTW… I learned a torturous colon (TC) and a redundant colon (RC) are 2 separate things : the TC is when you have kinks and twists that can cause your food to literally get lodged in your colon, hence the reason for needing to use laxatives, staying hydrated. Yada, yada, yada!
The RC means your colon is too long for your body which can make it also have twists but not usually serious ones, but it definitely makes for a long time in moving food through your intestines, the longer digestion takes, the more toxins build up in your body which is why you literally feel like crap. Pun intended.
I have both conditions and both are congenital (born that way),
It has caused me to struggle with anorexia my whole life bc no matter how small I got, I always had bloating g which I thought was a fat stomach. I always had stomachaches as a child and was accused of just being lazy/not wanting to apply myself/ not wanting to go to school … you get the picture.
Well i wasn’t diagnosed until I was in my very late 50s, I’m about to have my 60th birthday.
The drs gave me that procedure where they scrape your esophagus, stating I had small non-cancerous cysts caused by GERD (which I’ve never had heartburn or GERD symptoms in my life!) and said I had a small hiatal hernia which they did not repair bc it was “so small”
A few months later my gallbladder went out and I had to have it removed but get this: my most pain was not on my right side but the lower left! Gastro Doc had me all worried, she said I may have ovarian cancer, since it ran in my family. I have a history of endometriosis- so I’m used to abdominal pain from that too. But this pain was unbearable.
So after they took out my gallbladder, the surgeon came in & said I have the “worst impaction of the colon “ he’d ever seen in his 20 years as a surgeon! So I still had the pain on the right side too- but I did have gallstones so the operation was definitely needed. They decided to keep me overnight and give me the “bowel prep” jug to drink and kept me until my bowels were completely empty. Let me tell you what - a little TMI here but I passed something huge that looked like something from the Stone Age and finally my right side stopped hurting and my bowels were clean! Now they having me living in Milk of Magnesia (MOM) tablets daily and doing a liquid MOM clean out once a week. It’s ruing my life! I have to plan everything around my bowel movements- which are seldom happening even with the MOM capsules, but I always feel like I have to go. And OMGOSH the constant cramps, gas, bloating and the anxiety it causes me makes my eczema flare up at times and/or I break out in hives.
I already have a traumatic brain injury that has left me disabled for life, though physically I am high functioning, I am on disability bc I have no shirt-term memory hardly and I can’t complete tasks, have rage and mood swings, etc.
Good Times!
So I have decided to stop the MOM & look for something natural .
The drs say MOM is magnesium therefore it’s natural, however it’s causing severe pain using it for so long
I can’t use gel-like fiber, the powder you mix with water it turns to gel in your gut (like Metamucil)
I can only eat sourdough bread, not a lot of heavy grains- the extra bulk gets stuck. And yes someone said they could feel their food moving down their digestive track- me too! But the drs look at me like I’m crazy when I say that!!
So I’ve heard of taking mineral oil or castor oil everyday. Both sound disgusting but the MOM is making me nauseous - so??
Any suggestions??

cat,
Doctors who can’t help you to plan a diet without meat are not very current on nutrition.
I haven’t eaten meat in 40 years. Easy. I do eat dairy, so I’m not a vegan. There are tons of high protein foods that are not meat.
Maybe you could meet with a nutritionist.

Sorry you are suffering so much and dealing with rather complex health issues. However, I believe you will find help if you work with Holistic professionals at this point. Find a Naturopathic Doctor and Functional Nutritionist that specializes in gut issues (IBS, SIBO, etc.). These folks are extremely knowledgeable about helping with the fallout of gastrointestinal (and even endocrine) issues that "mainstream" Gastros are generally unable to help with (beyond treatments/surgery/drugs). There are specific supplements and specific probiotics, and as well, targeted diets that can help ameliorate symptoms and promote healing. I've been managing IBS-SIBO-C for over 8 years and have achieved relief and care from working with holistic professionals and following this route of care. Bless you and sending healing energy and hope your way.

Gastroparesis ? means Slow emptying. I see GI this Tuesday to schedule test. 2019 diagnose gastroparesis. 2022 diagnose Chronic Gastritis. My Chart is extremely helpful. Know what drs do not tell you. I got off Colesevlam & dicyclomine for diarrhea. If you get this let your dr know when you have accomplished Stop. I told mine in 12/2023. he didn't listen. 4y's diarrhea turned to constipation entire 2024. w stomach Distensions so huge, look & feel 10 mo pregnant. Painful. Maternity tops at 66yy. Last 3 weeks got off GERD med., Fiber supplement & try anything to help go. I bought 8000mg Artichoke & take 1 a day w meal. I'm day 4 w going every day. Relief.

I have similar issues. Had a craniotomy due to bacterial meningitis of my brain in 2014. During this hospitalization I got pancreatic due my gallbladder being full of stones. It was removed in the fall of 2014. I have frequent BMs too. A lot of running to the bathroom. I am experimenting with dietary changes too. Bread bothers me but I will try your suggestion about sour dough bread. I love peanut butter that defininatelt causes bad constipation for me. Beans help me but too much and I have diarrhea. Just now realizing how stress impacts my bowels and I have ptsd. Definitely helped by lots of water. Just know learning caffeine can cause constipation with me too. And I like diet pepsi. So I am working on this as well. I get paid soon so I am going to try senna tea. And also working on reducing meat too. Any other ideas are appreciated.

Okay, It is just pain then? No poop issues? Gas issues? Others can weigh in on pain (not my issue). I have only a few recommendations:

1. Slippery Elm "tea" (inner bark) supports the mucosa of the gut. Pain might = inflammation. I take 1/2 teaspoon in hot water in the morning, first thing, but Google what might be best for her.

2. Stomach massage, to move stool and gas along. See the UK's NHS routine here: https://www.torbayandsouthdevon.nhs.uk/uploads/25773.pdf.

3. Bitter gourd. Sold at some Asian markets, either fresh or frozen. It helps me. There is a study posted to the NIH website. Google "NIH and bitter gourd." I put some in multi-veggie soups. It is definitely bitter, but I it makes a difference and I eat it often for a happy belly. If it is magical for her also, see what you can do. Maybe freeze-dry it for college and she can add it to canned soups.

4. If this genetic condition is amplified by stress, consider Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), the hypnosis route. All you do is listen to a recorded reading daily (the therapist creates a different one at the weekly session, the other days, its recording is your "homework"). Seven weeks and you are free; you can then induce the same gut benefits on your own, wherever you are, and listen to a recording again for a reboot. GI Psychology in Burke, VA. Virtual sessions. My therapist was Tina. I love that it is short course and then independence and success.

Good luck -- I am sure others will have some useful medication and other ideas.

I don’t know how I missed your replies last year. Turns out she is lactose intolerant (had to figure it out on our own) and she is doing much better. These tips are so helpful & I will keep for future occurrences.
