Acid Reflux and its Symptoms: Are they chronic?

Posted by mwarenski @mwarenski, Feb 13, 2017

Does anyone have a variety of symptoms associated with Acid Reflux that are chronic? Such as chest pain, back pain, weird tastes, etc.? Please tell me your symptoms. A little worried here...thinking it may be something more serious.

I'm sorry to hear of your symptoms including having had COVID. I thought I was going to have to live with all of my symptoms which also included several hours of lost sleep b/c I couldn't digest the food I was eating. I had been on PPI's and famotidine for many years. After developing a rash over quite a bit of my body, my doctor removed PPI's from my medications and added Carafate. When Famotidine was found to be linked to possibly causing cancer I was switched to Ranitidine. But since I started the enzymes, I am now sleeping and am slowly decreasing my Carafate and Ranitidine dosages. Hopefully I will be off of them soon!!

Thank you. How wonderful for you. What type of enzymes are you taking? Does that help with your food digestion? I get nausea a lot too

I also do not produce enough enzymes to digest various sugars found in certain foods. Even though I follow a FODMAP diet which helps to reduce the sugars that I cannot digest, I was still having digestive issues with this along with acid reflux. I have now tried enzymes which are helping me to digest the sugars and as a side benefit are also helping me with my acid reflux.

I had severe acid reflux for years and was on PPI's for 20 years. There is a lot of evidence now how bad these drugs are for us! I have posted how I got rid of mine. I had Lynx surgery but still had to take PPI's twice a day. Until I read about fructose malabsorption and stopped eating all fruit, some vegetables and all sugars of every kind, did I finally get off meds for good. I wouldn't have needed the surgery had I known this before the surgery. I have posted in this thread about the diet. Yes it's easier to take a pill or have surgery then cut out foods we love but when your start to feel better and find other foods that work it's worth it!

I read different online sites by googling enzymes/FODMAP and found information on replacement enzymes. One was Monash University's - FODMAP site and also a few other sites for recommendations. After reading different recommendations that were out there, I went on Amazon's site to look at the cost for these enzymes. Then I read the reviews, both positive and negative reviews. The enzymes that were recommended were very costly but in some of the reviews there were recommendations for other enzymes. One of the products was the one I selected, 'NOW Super Enzymes'. I read what enzymes were in this product and compared them to the more expensive brands. I decided that I would try one bottle for about $10, (90 tablets) - in case I want to cut them in 1/2). If they didn't work, I was willing to try the more expensive ones. I can't believe the difference they have made for me. I just hope that I do not become allergic to any of the ingredients in this product.
I wish you luck and hope that you will also find success in your quest for a solution!
