Had Laminoforaminotomy surgery on Right L3-S1

Posted by grayhairs @grayhairs, Aug 16 10:14am

Had the surgery for numbness in both legs and feet win I would walk or stand for more than 5 minutes. It was minimal invasive surgery and I an 11 days out. I have had no numbness since the surgery which is fantastic but on day 4 I started having leakage from the wound, It is clear and sometimes pinkish but no abnormal swelling. Has anyone dealt with this situation?

No, I would see another neurologist.

Okay, but I’ve seen 2 neurologists since late 2023. Neither recommended an MRI of spine. EMG indicated no neuropathy. Second one treated me for B12 deficiency. It’ll probably take me another referral to get back with one too. Idk. I’ll pick back up with it soon, because I have hand numbness during the night too.

I will tell you I had my GP order the MRI and then she referred me to a neurologist. That was my path. Hope you are able to find yours. 12 days and no numbness but still leaking some.

I will add that my Nerve Conduction test showed no neuropathy..... Didn't find my problem until the MRI.

Congratulations on the successful procedure!

I had open L3-L5 decompression and fusion surgery in 2024 and it also helped with my pain/numbness in back/legs/feet. I wasn’t able to shower for 2 weeks and the bandage stayed on for 2 weeks. I stayed overnight in the hospital after the surgery to manage pain and allow for a certain amount of drainage from the would before they would release me.

What type of bandage did they put on your incision(s)? Do you have dissolvable stitches and have you been to your first post op appointment? Did they give instructions not to bathe for a period of time after the procedure? Have you called the surgeon’s office and medical team to ask them about the drainage?

If it is clear and there is no redness/swelling/warmth on the incision(s), it may just be normal healing.

Did you do anything different on day 4 that would cause the drainage to start (did you bend or twist)?

Here is some information to monitor if there is a CSF leak:

Signs of a cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) leak following spine surgery can vary, but some common symptoms to watch for include:
Common Signs and Symptoms

Clear Fluid Drainage: Leakage of clear or slightly pink fluid from the surgical incision or nose.
Headache: A severe headache, often described as a "thunderclap" headache, which may worsen when sitting or standing and improve when lying down.
Nausea and Vomiting: These symptoms can accompany headaches.
Neck Stiffness: Difficulty in moving the neck or stiffness may occur.
Changes in Vision: Blurred or double vision can be a sign of increased intracranial pressure.
Hearing Changes: Some may experience ringing in the ears (tinnitus) or other auditory changes.
Dizziness or Balance Issues: Feeling lightheaded or having trouble with balance can occur.
Additional Considerations

Fever: A fever may indicate an infection, which can be a complication of a CSF leak.
Neurological Symptoms: Any new weakness, numbness, or changes in sensation should be reported immediately.
If any of these symptoms are present after spine surgery, it is essential to contact a healthcare provider promptly for evaluation and management. Early intervention can help prevent complications associated with CSF leaks.

Congratulations to you also. No special bandage as it came off very easy after 3 days per their instructions, I was free to shower after 3 days. Dissolvable stitches, my post op appointment is a week and a half away, but I did see the PA about the wound leakage and that are keeping a eye on it. They requested follow up on 8-18. My hope is that it is normal healing. Did you have leakage after being released?

I could not see the bandage on my back (couldn’t twist and my eyes were bad to see it in the mirror). My back bandage was large and thick but I did not see any soaking of the bandage coming through.

I had 2 cervical spine surgeries and my most recent was June 2025. I had some clear/pink drainage after the bandage came off. There was a point I wanted to double check it wasn't an infection so I had it checked at the ER (told by my surgeon’s office to just be safe). It was red and irritated at times with some light drainage but it wasn’t warm to the touch and the swelling was normal post op swelling/healing of the incision. My stitches were also dissolvable but when they cut the long end/tail, there were still pieces that stuck through the incision and I would feel the ends if I ran my finger over the incision.

The best you can do is keep your incision clean and dry to allow for good healing and no infection. After a period of time, you may be able to apply an ointment like Aquaphor or Mederma scar cream w/SPF (you want to protect fresh scars from the sun as they will darken if you don’t).

Keep us posted on how your appointment goes tomorrow.

God bless!
