Nasal Congestion: What helps, especially at night?

Posted by patrick1000 @patrick1000, Feb 13 5:58pm

I have COPD, asthma, and a bit of emphysema and am using Trelegy and ipratropiam. Winter and summer about half way through the night a get extreme congestion sometimes totally blocking my nasal breathing.
Any tips?

Budesonide nose spray helped me a lot with nasal congestion,
i.e. in the evening.
With a delay of 1-2 days, so probably not local effects but
the corticosteroids.
There is some risk with longterm corticosteroids, though.
Drinking more may also help.

I use breath right strips every night and one spray of nasal stray per nostril. Works good.

Hi, @urjldjt22 - welcome to Mayo Clinic Connect. Glad you've found something that helps with nasal congestion, especially at night.

Do you know what was causing your congestion? Are you finding the breathing strips comfortable enough to get to sleep with them on?

REPLY

Thanks for responding. Don't know what is causing the congestion. Might be smoking...I quit four days ago, wearing patch. Sofar, so good. I don't even notice breathing strips. They fit good.

Mostly the same story, still need to find the allergy and see a specialist regarding the passages. I think not just uncomfortable but a bit dangerous to have these sleep problems. I'm going back for a breathing test this year and am amassing a checklist.

I was taking generic Flonase for over 15 years and finally stopped as I did not see any benefit. I had a blood test for allergy. ENT wants to do a turbinate reduction. I finally sort of demanded they do some kind of imaging and they called for a CT scan. I will see one of the ENT docs in a week or so. Doctors don't seem to listen to the patient these days.

Hi, @chzuck, and welcome to Mayo Clinic Connect. I'm sorry you are not feeling listened to by your doctors.

How did you appointment with the ENT doctor go? What was suggested?

REPLY

I use nasal prongs to open up nasal valves.

@patrick1000 - I'm not the model saline rinser, but I do try to do it when I can. It does seem to clear out my nose (sometimes startlingly so, if you know what I mean - like a giant vacuum went through).

patrick1000 - Do you have any observations or theories as to why it works for you sometimes and not always?

@carculmer and @orangetiger - other than the taste that one of you didn't care for, do you find the azelastine helpful with your symptoms?

It is helpful but in spite of using the spray correctly it still runs down my throat when I put my head up.

I had bad congestion, nothing helped. My ear, nose & throat doctor recommended.
NeilMed Sinus rinse. Use it every night and morning. It cleans your nose. It works amazing!
The kit comes with a bottle and sample.
I also use Flonase to squirts after the nasal flush.

Hope this helps you to feel better soon.
