I have started to choke spontaneously on my own saliva. Anyone else?

I’m a 75 year old female take no medication and have had no diagnosis. Lately I’m chocking on my own saliva occasionally. The kind of chocking that used to happen only when liquid goes down the wrong way. Now it seems that I spontaneously choke on my own saliva. Anyone have this experience?

Chronic lymphocyte leukemia Pretty sure it would not have to do with this

I have noticed that too in the last couple of years. I am a 78 yo female. I thought it was caused by breathing in when I am swallowing saliva. I’ve been paying attention to that. For years I can choke eating. I always have water near by when I eat for that reason.

HELLO!!

Y-E-S!!! A problem for me too at age 67. I noticed that my saliva was getting thicker, and becoming an issue with swallowing. My Dr prescribed Loratidine, which solved the issue for me.
I realize that you might need something else or a procedure of some sort, but l wanted to share my experience.

I hope you find an answer soon.

Good luck!!

Yes have had this condition for a long time.
Have you been tested for allergies? They can cause tremendous increase in saliva and of course running down your throat and getting into windpipe. I take an allergy pill once a day.

Food triggers can also "trigger" severe salvia response and the condition you describe as I get that also. Anything really spicy will have me coughing within seconds.

I would try to speak to your doctors about doing allergy tests to see if the amount of saliva and mucus being triggered can be reduced. Also keep a journal on food. The journal can help you find which food are triggers and the choking on salvia. I know a lot of work, but I was coughing really bad and the choking on salvia. I had to find remedies.

The mucus will go down your throat. Most of the time the body will move to the stomach as you swallow but can (like mine and yours), make its way to your airways and then the coughing reflect will be dramatic.

I see someone mentioned reflux. This can cause a real sensitivity in the throat area. Then eating and drinking, even coughing can cause tremendous mucus. It is why we need to find out what is triggering the mucus.

I try to avoid known triggers. What I found too was when I feel sensitivity in my throat I try to drink something that soothes my throat. That helps me also. But we are all different and what my triggers are may not be what is causing your symptoms so best to get it checked out.
Allergies can come at any time in your life. You can develop them at any time. I have become extremely sensitive to pine. Guess where I live, Florida. Half the trees are pine.
Good luck.

Hi Sunil123
I have been suffering from hypersalivation for several months after chemotherapy and surgery for my Pancreatic cancer.
I have tried all sorts of medications without any result.
It is so depressing, isn't it?
Are you still suffering from hypersalivation? Did you find a cure?

Have you found out anything in your search? I have a similar issue and have ended up on oxygen 24/7 because the mucus closes off my breathing.

I have had this happen for the past 25 years. I strangle on my saliva and it gets very scary. I have to sit down with my head down between my knees to get a breath. Most of the time only getting small amounts of air. I'm always afraid I won't get that breath. I am anxious to find some way to solve this.
