Barbara - we do not need to produce a mucus plug to have a good specimen. My lungs only had visible (on imaging) plugs at the worst stages of my infection. But you only need to produce mucus (not saliva) to have a testable sample.

Thank you Sue.
When the RT helped me to produce a specimen she looked at the vile and looked specifically for a mucus plug(s) in my testable sample. I have thought for over a year now that I needed to have a good mucus plug for testing. Good to know that "you only need to produce mucus".
Fortunately all my specimens have been accepted and they all had a mucus plug in them. So now I don't have to work so hard, so to speak, to bring up a mucus plug(s) for testing along with the mucus.
To share good news, my mucus plugs went from deep green in 2022 to a very pale yellow after starting air way clearance in 2023.
Hope you have had a good summer so far. A bit too hot however here in OKC.
