Scar tissue after knee replacement

Posted by leithlane @leithlane, Jan 31, 2017

I had knee replacement surgery 6 weeks ago . Through PT I have been working on breaking up the scar tissue only for it to regrow by the time I get back to PT two days later. I have been massaging at home, using a hand held massager and roller. It is painful and swollen. I am getting very disheartened. Any suggestions as to what else I can do. Has anyone had laser treatments to break up scar tissue? Were they effective?

@briard

My knee was done in HSS in New York and the implants are perfect - you could try there - find a doctor there who will do this and watch that he does take Medicare or your insurance, because all the top doctors there do not take Medicare anymore.

I am still in PT being massaged and do some myself - having problems with the patella tendon - doing exercises in the pool - it seems to get a little better very slowly !!! - Maybe there is hope after 2 years ? So don't give up just keep on pushing through the pain !!

I did not have arthroscopic, I had robotic - they can do a much finer, intricate surgery (where their fingers can't fit) Correct me if you know better. But, I'am over 70 and constantly get praise, from Drs. and PT, for how well I'm doing 6 weeks out.

yes I have Medicare and I get the massage at PT - but I do a lot of massaging myself - its hard on the fingers, though !

Do you know what the script said? I asked Dr. and PT many times but, get No. I know it would help -but, can't reach my calves very well. And I had disastrous toe surgery - 3 toes need to be pulled or straightened.

I thought the laser treatment was going to be great it worked for me for the first few weeks then became less effective

Hi @bizzarebird1. Have they offered any other suggestions? I did aqua therapy and found it to be very helpful. The water takes the pressure off the joints and it is easier to manipulate the knee. There is also a technique called dry needling which helps to break up scar tissue and improve range of motion. Those are just a few idea that might help. Let us know how it goes!
