Osteoporosis and Forteo (teriparatide): What to hear experiences

Posted by ans @ans, Feb 16, 2023

Wanting to hear people’s experience with using Forteo generally , good and bad. Concerned about having to travel and keeping it at the 36-46F range. Also would like to hear from those that used it 15-20 years ago and if any medical issues have come about that are related to Forteo.

I had 13 compression fractures before starting Forteo. I completed the full 24 months and have not fractured since. Now, 7 years later I have just started the generic version of Forteo and will do that for 6 months and then Evenity. Forteo shows bone growth at 3 and 6 months, so I am hopeful!

What did you do/take in the 7 year interim?

nwyatt, After the 24 months on Forteo, I took one shot of Prolia and then Raloxifene 60mg. I will complete the 18 months of Forteo and then go back on the Raloxifene I think. The recommendation was Evenity and then Prolia for life, but Evenity was not approved and I am still on the fence about Prolia.

I recently experienced my first travel experience with Forteo and it was challenging.
I shopped for travel coolers, and after the hassle of the 4Allfamily website (intrusive, having to answer personal questions before allowing access to shopping, difficulty with the site in general), I opted to order a travel cooler with built in digital thermometer from eBay. The batteries were finicky, and I shopped at 4 different stores for replacements (just in case!) but wasn't able to find the right size.
It was a short flight from Sacramento to SanDiego, but by the time I got to my hotel the temp had exceeded 46 degrees even though it was within the time limit. My hotel refrigerator wasn't cold enough according to the extra analog thermometer that I had brought, so the maintenance person came to my room and his thermometer said it was actually cooler. The ice packs had to be stored in the hotel freezer because the room fridge didn't have a freezer. blah blah blah, it was a hassle! Then when we checked out, we had an afternoon on our own so the hotel kept the Forteo in one fridge and the ice packs in another! etc. I would love to hear from someone who has had better success so I can more successfully travel again.

please also read the next comment by oopsiedaisy - a better price on vendor's website.

Someone posted a comment recently that a $40 medicine cooler is available on amazon. It uses gel however it has an external digital temperature display as well - nice!

For travels that involve unpredictable accommodations or schedules, the product with the link above gives you more control imo.

Curious, did you not go on a follow up medication after you stopped Forteo.??? I’ve been told you need to go on something to maintain the gains realized. Can you share your scores , if you remember, before and after and now!!! WOW, you really has a good experienceThanjs for your input!!

I was wondering the same thing, I have been on forteo for a little over two years and was told I need to go on a follow up to keep the gains, but I really do not want to.

You have to follow up with something. You can't just go from Forteo to nothing.
