COMPRESSION FRACTURES R/T OSTEOPOROSIS
I ask this question because I have severe Osteoporosis. I currently have a burst fracture, compression fracture and a wedge fracture. All around T8. The pain is awful!. I was wondering if others have ever experienced a compression fracture, and how they survived it. I am 70 years old. I feel my body is just falling apart. I am normally an active person. My life is now sedentary which is now affecting my mental health.

I hope it will. Seems like it is taking forever. But thankyou for the positive note.
No side effects at all on the pen whatsoever. Forteo works great for me.👍 and doesn't cost me a dime.
Was approved for extra help with prescriptions. Another plus.
I am so sorry you are going through this alone. This group can be a good support as many of us have struggled with this diagnosis and the impact on our lives. Hang in there!
I was glad to read below that you are starting on Tymlos. I was on it for four months but had to switch to another drug because my insurance would no longer cover it. I am now on Evenity and have had two treatments to date. I am not having any significant side effects other than two sore arms where they inject the medication and feeling a bit achy and tired for 24 hours.
@harryboy7 Hi. I've had three compression fractures, multiple rib fractures and bone marrow edema which fractured bones in one ankle and foot. Two of the vertebral fractures were asymptomatic and discovered on CT when I woke up one night with the third which sent me to the ER. You have my sympathy as that was a very challenging time. I was in severe pain, frightened and completely overwhelmed. I rested a lot, and started PT when the pain got better. I was put on Fosamax by my PCP, then quickly transitioned to Evenity for one year, then Tymlos for one year and just started Reclast in May 2025. I've been lucky as I tolerated the meds well and had good gains.
Hang in there! It sounds like you have a good endocrinologist and Tymlos is an excellent start. Wishing you all the best moving forward!
Thank you so much. PT sounds like a good option when things hopefully heal. But I am so afraid my bones with break again even with the slightest movement. Did or do you feel that way?
@harryboy7 Oh yes, I certainly did feel that way for quite a while. Then one day, I decided that I would no longer indulge my feelings of fear and helplessness. I firmly believe that stress is the worst thing for my health. I can't always control what happens to me, but I can control how I respond. I now know that I'm a strong and resilient person that can handle whatever comes my way. Appreciate yourself and how you've managed to navigate your way through this chapter. It's not easy and you've gotten this far. Let your body relax and heal. Think better thoughts. Keep going.
As always, best wishes.
I also had a compression fracture at T8. I was out of my mind with the pain. This lasted for about 6 weeks and I slowly regained my ability to get out of bed without assistance and began walking. It has been 6 months since my injury and I am back at the gym, swimming and walking. FYI, I am 76.
It has been 9 weeks for me. I have been crying everyday. I have been in so much pain. Plus I live alone. It is hard to be super active then sedentary. Several months prior to the spine injury, I fell and broke my elbow. Had surgery. Now my spine. I don't feel hopeful. However, reading your post gave me hope. Thank you. I am glad you are doing well.
I hear you, and I’m with you! Prior to January, I was an extremely active 66-year old, doing everything right to combat my osteoporosis: hiking, weight-bearing exercise, eating healthy. In mid-January I got a severe compression fracture in T-8 and then four above T-8 went like dominoes with wedge fractures. Hang in there, because they do heal and will feel better. Now I’m doing PT in the pool and rebuilding my stamina. It is a new normal because I do have residual pain and my breathing is more difficult, BUT I’m hopeful because everything is SO much better than it was a few months ago and getting better by the week. My doctor has recommended Evenity, but I can’t start it for another 6 months because I just had oral surgery and must wait for a new implant to be completely healed. Meanwhile I am taking AlgaeCal, which has had amazing results, according to testimonials… I’m getting a DXA next week and another in 6 months. If my numbers have improved, I’ll hold off on the Evenity.
I know it must be hard going through this alone. Find hope and comfort in the small victories and the things that still bring you joy. Know that you are not alone in your suffering. Little by little, you will get better. 🫶
I feel like I can relate to your pain and fear. I went through something very similar and ended up with 13 consecutive compression fractions. I credit Forteo with saving my life as was ready to sign up for MAID. The daily injection is not a big deal. More like an epi-pin and quite doable once you get the hang of it. Just book and appointment with the pharmacist for your first injection/lesson and you will be fine. I did 24 months of injections, as was in such bad shape. Initially had to use a walker to get back on my feet and slowly began to recover. I still use a back brace from time to time if I am going to be gardening or vacuuming. It has been 8 years and I maintained well with one shot of Prolia for maintenance and then Raloxifene . I had very insignificant decline over those 8 years, that incrementally added up to needing another round of Forteo. I am currently on my 9th month and will do a bone density test at 12 months. I take it at night, and only found initial side effects of some light headedness, headache and tummy upset. All doable and subsided after 6-8 weeks. I have lost 4 inches in height, but back on treadmill daily and some light weights. You can do it. But sounds like you really need a bone builder like Forteo. I am on the generic brand this time around, and it is cheaper and partially covered by my insurance. Also, once I was able to, I walked back and forth chest height in the pool and this helped me tremendously in my initial recovery. I hope you get good help and support. It does get better : )
