Hormone Treatment Experience
Had my first visit today at MD Anderson Proton Center and the Dr ordered AlteraAI to see if Hormone Therapy would help
If so he is leaning to Hormone Therapy Light. Not sure what that means? Hormone Therapy does not look like fun!
Anyone have experience with ADT Light or just Hormone Md light? Are the side effects the same?
Thanks for any feedback

I was on ADT (Lupron, Abiraterone) for 3 years. I’ve been off for 10 months. I still have all of the side effects except high blood pressure and high blood sugar. I fixed the ED problem with IPP surgery and my testosterone is SLOWLY returning. It is now 67. Since I did not lose my libido while on ADT, my wife and I continued sexual relations without penetration the whole time ( we called it lesbian sex). We are now able to have the real thing. Since I don’t know whether I will have to go back on ADT, I am doing my best to learn how to live with the side effects. It is not easy, but I feel that I am making progress.
Good to hear! I also try to deal with the side effects, which for me means continuing to understand their causes and best remedies. I'm making a list of questions for my Monday urologist meeting and plan to tell him that I'm disappointed that, with Testosterone back in the normal range, the big 4 are still in place:
- [ ] 10 lbs. belly fat with same or better diet/drinking
- [ ] Energy/Strength: can’t run for long; prior to ADT able to run 5/10 K
- [ ] Still getting Hot Flashes
- [ ] ~80% erections; less concerned than above
My questions will be:
- [ ] Do all symptoms result from 4 months of Orgovyx, i.e. not from radiation?
- [ ] Best ways to lose weight? (Yes, I know diet and exercise)
- [ ] Are there any other non-drug/non-invasise ED methods, e.g. Acoustic wave therapy (AWT)
I have had very good results treating bone spurs/achilles tendonitis with Acoustic wave therapy, also known as extracorporeal shockwave therapy (ESWT). Think of it as meat tenderizer...it smooths the tissues.
BTW, I was surprised that I also didn't lose libido even when my T was super low...I guess it's hard wired in some of us.
I’m not sure they told you about this, but you really need to start taking calcium too. In your next blood test, try to get calcium checked. Your bone strength is really affected by the ADT drug so adding calcium helps keep the bones stronger,
My oncologist is the one that told me I should be on it and in fact, I’m taking it three times a day because you can’t take more than 500 mg at a time, Anything more just gets thrown away. I had low calcium until I did this for a while.
Best way to lose weight is to weigh yourself every day and eat based on what you weigh. That has allowed me to stay at my 189 target at 6’4”. I do have a little bit of belly I go to the gym 2-3 days a week and do around 70 situps each time. That seems to keep it from getting any worse since I’m not gaining any weight.
I use a Withings scale that gives you weight accurate to a 10th of a pound. I weighed 189.2 this morning. I can eat normally. It keeps track of how much water you have in your body, How much lean mass? Muscle and fat weight also shown. The app that works with the scale, also syncs with the Apple health app and has all of its information.
It is really helped with keeping my weight under control.
I exercise at least one hour daily (intense yoga 3x, weightlifting 2-3x, running/hiking daily), eat a low-carb, high protein diet with only fresh foods (no processed) and meditate daily. I have not gained any weight and the exercise helps with the depression. Once your testosterone level drops to zero or < 4, you may have ED. Consider IPP surgery. I just wish I had done it sooner. I also take Calcium with D3 1200 mg daily. Stopping caffeine has helped with the hot flashes and I don’t drink alcohol. Waking up 2 or 3 times a night with hot flashes really sucks! Keeping a positive attitude as best you can and remembering that you are at least not dying of cancer this week helps.
Is there a particular form or product you have found that works for getting both Calcium and D3 or do you take both supplements separately?
You want calcium citrate, and it always comes with D in it, If you take it three times a day it’s enough, if you take it two times a day you probably want to take 1000 milligrams of D.
Costco sells it and it includes magnesium.
I found out about calcium citrate because my medical insurance includes a Pharmacist calling me twice a year and going over all of my medication’s and recommending what I should take. She was real clear that I should be taking citrate not the other versions.

Thanks Jeff for the video, it was encouraging for sure
The Dr said my situation was borderline: intermediate risk/Gleason 7/3+4/6 out of 12 cores: Cancer one 4.3/ on Nerve Bundle PNA present/rest 3+4/ last PSA 6.6/Level 2.0+
I also have 3 stents and on blood thinners/heart issues which run in my genes, both parents died in their 60s from heart attacks.
My urologist said radio right away this was before I went to MD Anderson Proton Center for a second opinion and they said maybe Radiation? Later/ Maybe Active Surveillance or ADT lite? That is why Dr Choi set up the AI test to see if ATD made sense or not but put in 28 Radio sessions just in case
I know no one lives forever and you can’t predict how you will deal with side effects either
But from what I have read if the cancer spreads that can be very painful too: right now still in the capsule
So everyday flip back and forth, ATD or not. The video seems to say no for people 80 and above.
Ok so thanks again for your feedback it’s helpful to get feedback and to share my feelings: with someone it’s scary stuff since other than night peeing and light headines/ dizzy/ might be my anxiety about cancers makes the cancer reality always on my mind
Thanks!
