Has anyone completely gotten over Long Covid? Please post here

Posted by bermuda8 @bermuda8, 6 days ago

Hi - I went to the Mayo's Long Covid program and the Dr. told me "the good news is that it will eventually go away". Hoping to hear from some folks that are completely over Long Covid. I am hopeful this will be the case for everyone suffering from this awful illness eventually. Most likely once someone gets over Long Covid they probably stop following this message board. It would be great if they would post their circumstances and it also would give us some hope.

It decreased in severity and became more manageable with medications and self-treatment strategies.

But it did NOT “go away”. It has been reactivated or simply started as a new version due to 2 recent covid infections. I had about 1 year of a more normal life due to getting appropriate medical care (the non-gaslighting kind), helpful medications, and accommodating employment (sort of).

I have not been able maintain, on a regular basis, some of the very helpful self-treatment strategies, mostly due to needing to work. I do them occasionally, aiming for 2 X per week. It's mostly medication because a pill minder is easier and faster that NIR + red light therapy, TENS, or Yoga. Medications are more expensive though.

I'm sure that some people do fully recover; depending on age, gender, when in the pandemic they caught it, pre-existing health conditions, how many active COVID-19 infections they had over time, how acute they were, and environmental conditions, then & now.

I was very, very lucky to stumble upon an MD who was willing to treat me outside of her specialty.

That made the world of difference.

I am also a “responder” to basically almost any vaccination. For a few weeks after covid, flu, pneumonia, shingles, vaccinations etc I feel almost completely normal. Covid boosters especially do this.

I probably have a very damaged immune system. I had ALL infectious childhood illnesses, including measles, and mono. Then starting in late adolescence, transfusions (who knows what lurked in those way back), mysterious infectious type illnesses, then HCV, HSV 1+2, etc. Living a very clean life may have proffered some protection, I don't know.

I know I'm lucky to be alive and functioning. I'm deeply grateful to those couple of MDs who managed to lift the curse on me of “it's all in your head” and see the infectious illnesses I'd had as an entire life package of risks factors after I got sick with COVID-19.

I hope everyone recovers, I really believe it's possible somehow. I hope medical care learns from COVID-19 and LC + CFS/ME and is better able to support and heal people with these illnesses.

I replied to your question, but I'm sorry, the reply did not really provide much hope.

I want to add that I found ways to function exceptionally well, my symptoms were overall less severe, and most people around me had no clue of what I was experiencing. The sacrifice was in relinquishing many things I enjoyedsin order to function at work and in social.contexts. So in a sense, I did recover, just not completely. There absolutely is hope.

Your post sounds exactly like me 100%. I could have wrote it that’s how much it mirrors me. I feel horrible saying this but it gave me comfort that I’m not alone and not going crazy. I feel like a failure that my adderall is now the only thing that helps me get through just doing basic paper work or maintaining friendships. I have a good three to fours hours in the morning and then I’m done. My brain fog gets so bad too I can’t even comprehend the basic conversations mid afternoon. I get so winded I can’t talk on the phone for a long period of time plus it spikes my heart rate.

Don’t feel bad about the reassurance you get from knowing someone else is having a similar experience mscott. That is why I joined this discussion. I don’t know anyone else with this and most people know or hear very little about it. Sometimes I feel like my friends think I am just strange. I no longer go out and seldom leave the house unless it is necessary.

Vostie! That’s all such good news. Thanks for being so generous with your exper-ience with LC. Your walks have improved dramatically! WOW! That’s “true grit!” I’ve had most of your symptoms (weak thighs,
fatigue, neuropathy, etc., so I will get out and walk more
now, like you have been doing, despite the fear of overdoing it, then crashing. (A perfect way to describe it, right!” BIG QUESTION - how did you get your doc to give you LDN??? Mine act like they would wind up in jail if they gave it to me. I’ll fly anywhere to find a doc who will shoot me up with it. Could you give me your doc’s name and number? ANOTHER BIG QUESTION Did LDN give you any of the many ugly side effects listed? They worry me. Maybe they affect only few people, or rarely do so. Did your doc address them with you? FINAL BIG Q - what is your antihistamine diet? My legs are quite weak too, so that diet sounds most important. Between weak legs and dizziness, falls become a real danger.
Thanks again, Vostie. You are so helpful. We owe you lots of gratitude and and good wishes. Sincerely, Stuart

You can get LDN through AgelessRx.

I doubt that I will ever completely recover. I had the Moderna vaccines & I get bouts of extreme foggyness, fatigue & whole body pain rather frequently. Luckily it only lasts about a day & improves with Tylenol. Ibuprofen makes it worse, just like we were told when we had covid!! A friend says it sounds like fibromyalgia, so I guess I have LC Fibromyalgia now. Great!! I also continue to have a thick mucous coughing problem but that has mostly improved nicely with new meds & only flares up when the weather is cooler & wetter. From reading these comments, things could be SO MUCH WORSE!!! I am grateful my symptoms are not debilitating. My new outlook on life is to do everything I want to do NOW!!! No more waiting around for a better time or situation that may never come!!

Trump has not “taken away funds” for research on LC!

. . . rather, the Dept of Health and Human Services cut back funding. Much of it was restored, however. Rest assured that scientists all over the world continue to research LC treatments despite any cuts in funding.

My journey through LC may be little different from others as I didn’t experience the POTS, PEM, brain fog or overwhelming exhaustion - symptoms that seem difficult to treat. In Feb. 2023, couple weeks after a mild case of Covid treated with Pavlovid, I started to get short of breath after walking a short block, whereas before, I could walk a mile and swim with no problems. My heart rhythm slowed and became erratic. My previously well controlled asthma flared up. Eventually, in May, I developed complete heart block requiring a pacemaker. I lost my appetite and could not eat. Had anxiety attacks where I wanted to jump out of my skin and went into a period of depression. I took a six month course of escitalopram and got better emotionally. I had complications with my pacemaker, had a run of atrial fib and a few episodes of congestive heart failure and pericardial effusion. In January, 2024, the pericardial effusion was drained, and pacemaker leads repositioned. I was still struggling with the asthma needing to use inhalers and nebulizers. By June of that year, I was getting better - started swimming and traveling again. Today, I’m still left with chest tightness/heaviness but can manage with Symbicort and Albuterol inhalers. So, I guess I’m more or less over long COVID but my ailments were more concrete and treatable. My heart goes out to those still struggling with the brain fog and exhaustion that do not have any definitive cures. With the present administration, I’m afraid any further research into long COVID will be halted - our local LC clinic has closed. Bless all of you still suffering and keep fighting.

LC research continues all over the world. The Trump Admin. cancelled some research but it was restored soon afterward. The news didn’t report any specifics, however, so it’s difficult to know what was cut and what was restored.
