Tonsillectomy & neck lymph node removal at the sometime surgery
I had a .09 cm cancer in left tonsil and had both tonsils removed Also was told to remove 1 infected neck 2.0 cm lymph node in the neck area only could do by modified radical neck dissection. If I wanted more non invasive partial neck dissection or sentinel lymph node biopsy surgery he would not be able to do at the sometime. I unfortunately went with the modified radical neck dissection which he said was the only way to complete as one surgery. Successfully removed both tonsils and 55 neck lymph nodes with only one being infected and 54 healthy. All clear margins which I am grateful for. I am now compromised moving forward if I need radiation which I am holding off on. Also told me I would have no lymphoma which I currently do not have 5 weeks post surgery. I also have a distinct nasal voice as soft palate has not properly sealed as of yet. A simple surgery and this is the result. I really need my nasal voice to become normal again as I am an outgoing energetic 70 year old with a zest for life that I am affected by. I am beside myself with difficult time getting any sleep or peace as I am constantly on myself for to not having 2 separate surgeries with in all likelihood great results. Anyone with similar experience? Thank you. Fred

Has your psoriasis ever flared up or caused problems during your treatments?
Thanks - Darlene
I had the same issues with my voice. Air escaping and sounding like I had a clothes pin on my nose. I’m two years out and my friends tell me that my voice is back to normal. Doesn’t seem normal to me as I have difficulty regulating air when I speak long sentences
I had a tonsillectomy and 6 biopsies and then back to surgeon for lymphnode dissection (18 removed with two cancerous) and TORS surgery to remove residual. The voice damage came from the robotics surgery behind my removed right tonsil. Then to 20 rounds of radiation and 2 chemo. My weight is back to normal and energy is recovered. It will seem like forever but your voice will be fine!!!
Thank you for the reply
All the Best!
No Darlene it has not
Hello @tomczyfe. You have had good responses from others who have had cancer similar to yours. My head and neck cancer was ear origin so I'm not much help for you, but I did have select neck dissection at the same time as my temporal bone resection to remove the tumor. Radiation with chemo started 5 weeks later. I just wanted to add that you might benefit from a speech therapist who can provide exercises to possibly speed up your voice recovery. And also consider a mental health therapist to help you resolve your feelings about your surgery and the loss of sleep worrying. Large cancer centers or their associated assistance groups could provide you with a contact. My husband has dealt with multiple complications from his bladder removal due to bladder cancer and the first of those was because we listened to the doctor and chose one route over the other. Many surgeries and procedures later and the acceptance of his decision, the important fact is freedom from cancer. We can deal with all the other issues as they arise if the cancer is gone.
Our new normal is often not easy to live with but we are living and we must make the best of it. Set yourself some short term goals and celebrate as you reach them. One day 15-20 years from now you too may be giving advice to new patients. Hang in there and know it will get easier.
Thank you for sharing
Did your husband have sleep or anxiety issues or was he able to deal with head on?
My story is just to offer an alternative for others with cancer in a lymph node. I have SCC that was removed over my ear followed by 20 radiation treatments. I then started imunotherapy (1 year now) but PET scan showed growing cancer in one neck lymph node. I had a needle biopsy to confirm and then it was suggested to try an alternative therapy since it was focused in only one node. A needle was inserted into that node and filled with ethanol intended to kill the cancer cells. It worked! My next PET scan showed no sign of cancer cells. Should they return, its a procedure that can be repeated. I still continue with Libtayo every 3 weeks and scan every 3 months.
My husband has been lucky in that he can usually sleep despite surrounding issues. While anxiety was a temporary problem in the midst of it all, he pretty much has dealt with things head on. He is able to move forward with the solutions and not dwell on what might have been. I am much worse than him about losing sleep worrying. As they say, worrying doesn't get you anywhere helpful, but it can be so very hard to shut it down. Some of us are just worriers and do it much better than others.
Hello,
I had a modified radical neck dissection years ago. You can read my story somewhere on here. At the time the malignant spot was in my thyroid and all thru left side of neck, thus complete thyroid removal as well. I have a 6 “ scar from back of ear to middle of throat but I am grateful to my surgeon (Canadian from the U of A) to be alive and well. Although this surgery has given me a permanent disability I consider myself fortunate that it was not worse. Life goes on and you too will find joy and peace in all of it once your healing progresses. After all, you are very early in the game. Be well and stop and smell the roses where you can. 😊
Hello Backatcha, my name’s Robert and I’m very happy you’re alive and well. If you don’t mind sharing just a little bit deeper. I know that you’ll be taking something to compensate for your lack of a thyroid gland. Some form of levothyroxine or something that comes with a wide & particular type of side effects. See, I’d really like to know (if you don’t mind) because that’s what I may be looking at myself so… thank you for your time concerning this matter. Bob or what I show as Chebo54
