Nerve pain after having shingles
My husband still suffers from nerve pain after 3 years of having shingles.
It’s concentrated on his leg down to his foot.
The pain is constantly there, you can’t even touch the skin, that hurts very bad.
We did all kind of pain management, not a help at all.
Now our doctor told us about Qutenza therapy for post shingles nerve pain.
(Capsaicin 8%)) pads
Does anybody experienced this therapy?
Thank you in advance .

1 ReactionThe pain your husband is experiencing is called post-herpetic neuralgia, because it occurred after a case of shingles. I have it on the right side of my face/scalp, but was helped after two weeks of attacks that felt like a hot iron pressed against my face and scalp by having my prescription for gabapentin upped to 1800mg a day. When I was on 1200mg, I had the attacks. Does your husband take gabapentin. I don't know if it is mainly for post-herpetic neuralgia of the face or if it helps anywhere on the body.
From Wikipedia:
Postherpetic neuralgia is neuropathic pain that occurs due to damage to a peripheral nerve caused by the reactivation of the varicella zoster virus. PHN is defined as pain in a dermatomal distribution that lasts for at least 90 days after an outbreak of herpes zoster. Several types of pain may occur with PHN including continuous burning pain, episodes of severe shooting or electric-like pain, and a heightened sensitivity to gentle touch which would not otherwise cause pain or to painful stimuli. We tried Gabapentin, didn’t help.

What is the cream?
How much gabapetin are you taking?
My wife's shingles on her face started about 4 weeks ago and the scabs are faling off slowly but she is in terrible pain. She is on 1500 mg gabapentin for the day.
300, 300,300 every six hours and 600 before bed time. She is also on 10 mg amitriptylene before bed.
After 14 years, I'm down to 300mg Gabapentin twice daily. The compound topical cream was formulated for me by an anesthesiologist/pain specialist. Gabapentin 6%, Lidocaine 5%, Amitriptyline 3%, Clonidine 0.2%. I apply several times a day around the eye, side of the nose (trigeminal nerve damage). My horrible pain subsided in about 30 days; then severe itching set in and has never improved. The meds help, but I take 100mg Trazodone at bedtime. I went to two large University medical centers and saw neurological surgeons to learn about devices they could implant to control nerve pain and severe itching. Very interesting, but I didn't do that. I've learned to live with it. I've been seeing a neurologist for years, hoping that something new will become available. The anesthesiologist/pain specialist has been the most helpful. I had not received the shingles vaccine before my attack; I'm now up to date with the vaccine!!! It sounds like your wife is doing everything she can. Hopefully, in a month or two, she will be much better. Jan
