How do you know you've been accepted at Mayo Clinic?

A PET scan identified a metabolically active lump in my lung. My PCP wants me to get a biopsy soon and I’ve been told that the Tucson area doesn’t have the physicians at the moment, for many reasons. I’m new to the possible world of cancer. My records were sent to the Mayo in Scottsdale but we’ve been told that I must wait to learn if I’ve been “accepted” or “denied”. If denied I just get a letter telling me so.
What does this mean? That is, what does it mean to be “accepted” or “denied”? Is it for insurance or something else? Is it because the Mayo doesn’t have enough physicians like here in Tucson? Can anyone help my wife and I understand what “accepted” or “denied” means?

Thank you all for your replies! It has been a little stressful working through the medical world and having never dealt with a potentially serious health issue like cancer. We have felt, as others may have too, that it was up to us to find the right care and keep pushing for it. We leaned on others and found that it helps to know people because I have a biopsy scheduled in two days and an appointment at the Mayo in Phoenix for next Monday. (Thanks to a friend who is a long-time oncologist in Arizona and who knows everyone.). I don’t understand the concept of “accepted” or “denied” at the Mayo but it doesn’t matter now. We got this news of a problem (large nodule) the day before our trip to Germany to see our kids but our friend kept the wheels going. The best thing is that we got to see our son, his wife and the grandchildren that we've never met, so we feel that whatever happens will be okay. God is so good!

@steelgang7 , That's great news about your upcoming appointments. I love that you were able to get to Germany, and to meet grandchildren! That's amazing.
Did you learn more at your appointment?
