Allergy, lung infection or something else??

For a few months now (at least two or three, I've had what people are saying is just allergies. I have never had allergies in my life (now 74 years), but now have stuffiness in head, wheezing, excessive coughing, and lately, a heaviness in breathing. I have an inhaler that I just started using and helps a bit but I'm not sure this is an allergy. No watery eyes, or runny nose at all, but I definitely sound nasally. I just walked up the hill from my pottery shop and was huffing, puffing, coughing and wheezing to the point of concern. Does this sound like allergies? Or does it sound more like a lung infection? My doc gave me a prescription for singular yesterday and we are picking it up this morning. She is 3 hrs away so our visits are virtual. I think I might need an x-ray. Is that a good idea, or should I just sit tight and try the singular?

Many patients are prescribed an inhaler and have no idea how to use it. It is important to ask your doctor and/or your pharmacist for specific instructions because it doesn't seem to be that clear in the packaging. Such an important process and so widely misunderstood.

This is in reply to cm’s comment about how to use an inhaler. So true!

You need someone to tell you exactly how to use it. Using an extender, or spacer, is important, as is washing mouth out after use.

But you need to know when to press the inhaler to get the full benefit. You will learn if you’ve done it right by the « feel » you get in your throat.

I also have found that some of those extenders (aka holding chambers) seem to work better than others.
Good luck.

I wonder if this is yet another delayed side effect of the Covid Vaccine.

To all that are possibly experiencing allergies, try these steps:
1. Practice slow deep breathing. Fill your diaphragm and then lungs via your nose, exhale slowly via your mouth.
2. Cut down on carbs (bread, rice, pasta, pastries, etc.) Carbohydrates metabolize into carbon dioxide which can severely inhibit normal breathing.
3. Drink organic tart cherry juice, 4 oz. at breakfast.
4. Inhale aroma of thyme leaves before walking or exercising and as needed.
5. Drink 4 ounces of organic pomegranate juice after exercising.
6. Sleep with your head elevated.
7. Wear N95 mask during high pollen season. Milwaukee brand N95 is great.
Hope this helps!
I'm off all meds, including albuterol.

Sagan

UPDATE : Thank all of you for your help and support. I do have an update. Following my original post, I did end up going to urgent care on June 15.. They did an x-ray which was clear, and listened to my breathing, wheezing and coughing. Diagnosed with Bronchitis.
The doctor there added Prednisone and cough pearls to what I'd been taking. She started me at 40 mg and tapered down. It worked, and within a day or two I was headed back to normal, by day three and four I was off the cough medicine and the albuterol and so happy to be done with it. Unfortunately, within about 10 days of getting off everything, the horrible cough and wheezing has slowly but surely come back. I'm a little scared because of this. I am scheduled for 5 types of PFT's on the 18th, so hopefully I'll know more.

I would certainly ask for a ct of lungs to rule in or out problems . Bless you , Crystalena

Thank you Crystalena. I am having several PFT related tests in 10 days. I forgot about asking for a CT. Probably depending on the results, they may recommend one.

Thanks so much.. I know I was using it wrong sometimes. I could feel it hitting the back of my throat rather than down my throat. I think I have it now. Still not helping much, but a bit.

Interesting. I guess I can ask them when I go for testing.

I would get an xray. I did, twice in fact, and all was clear. that gave me peace because I could rule out infected lungs. My doctor said it could be allergies as well. But, you have to be your own sleuth. Do you have any humidifiers in your bedroom or a room you sit in for a good period of time? We experimented and when my husband took the small humidifier out of the bedroom, the next morning, I didn't have green phlegm or heavy coughing or felt breathless like I normally do. I'm not saying this is the answer but just a precaution to check those cheap small humidifiers for sure.

Hello I will say get a CT scan on your lungs if anything else that can help you find out the cause and I do have long conditions and I have allergy asthma as well
