My sister has been diagnosed with CML recently. She is taking daily dose of hydroxy urea. So far ,her weekly blood monitoring shows ups and down in WBC abd RBC counts. She has some side effects..blackening of nails.
Will greatly appreciate hearing experiences of elderly patients with CML.

Lori, Thanks for the positive vibes and powerful words of wisdom. Distractions can be useful in stressful times.
Wishing the very best and goodluck to @ mjbulte!
My echocardiogram is 7/14, getting labs 7/16, bone marrow biopsy is 7/21. Had to cancel vacation as we were leaving 7/19.
Oh bummer, I’m really sorry you had to cancel your vacation. What a disappointment for you and your family after all the planning. I know you were vascilating on whether to go or not so I guess that decision was made for you. 😕
Ok, now it’s full speed ahead with finding out what the heck is going on with you so you can get on with your life. If you haven’t figured it out by now, I’m a ‘rip the bandaid off’ type gal and rather know what I’m dealing with than to fret about it. Not knowing just leaves you treading water with no direction to shore.
You have a couple of busy weeks ahead so I’ll be thinking about you and sending positive vibes for only good news! I’m here anytime you need a lifeline, moral support or you feel like venting. ☺️ Do you have any questions about the bone marrow biopsy?
Sending positive vibes..and big hugs.
Since I will mercifully be sedated, I’m less scared of the bx. How long does it take to get results?
After getting results from all these tests I’m considering a second opinion at Mayo or MD Anderson or Cancer Centers of America. Not the dx per se, but the treatment plan. Does the second opinion have anything additional or does it pretty much mirror the plan from my current hematologist. I just want to know my plan is the best option.
The analysis of the marrow and aspirate can take up to a week or so before all the results are consolidated, which can feel like an eternity when you’re waiting!
A 2nd opinion can be helpful to confirm a diagnosis and perhaps learn additional options for treatment, if necessary. It can also give you a feeling whether a specific doctor or treatment center is right for you.
Sometimes a larger teaching hospital such as MD Anderson or Mayo may have more doctors specializing in a specific disorder that can be helpful.
But first things first…get the testing out of the way and take it from there. From my personal standpoint I’m happy to hear you’re being sedated for the biopsy. For me, it’s the only way to fly! Others will beg to differ but I loved being oblivious for the procedure, then waking up to juice and Lorna Doone Cookies. 😅. Keep me posted, ok?
