alendronate and no progress

Posted by hillclan @hillclan, Jun 27, 2025

I have been taking alendronate (Fosamax generic) for 2 years. Just had another DEXA scan, and it showed slightly worse bone strength, by T score. My nurse practitioner thinks I should continue with the alendronate despite this. I have been diligent with calcium intake and vitamin D. Has anyone else had a similar experience?

Here's a tip for taking Fosamax. If you wait 2 hours before eating breakfast, you can gain an extra 40% absorption as compared to only waiting 30 minutes. This is called out in the Fosamax medication insert. One other thing to consider would be only drinking low calcium water (reverse osmosis or distilled) for those two hours to avoid calcium in the water.

Thank you, I will try that extra wait.

You seem to know a lot about this disease are you a doctor? There is a lot of terminology that is being used that I am not aware of. Is there a particular site that I can go to to become familiar with all of these terms and tests that some these people talk about. I only know that I am -4.3 and age 72, I am taking 80 mg tymlos daily by injection. Any help would be great!

Somewhat. I took Boniva for 2 years. My spine stayed the same but my hip decreased slightly. Going the natural route now.

I want to quit so bad because I do t k is if it’s worth taking these drugs. I work out every day and I have not had any broken bones and am in good health otherwise. I tried Prolia with bad effects and Alendronate is not agreeing with me. I want to quit cold turkey and your statement makes me want to quit. So thanks for posting this.

I would get a second opinion.
Being on a medicine and not seeing any results would motivate me to get facts.

Hi @mel100 - Thnks for the complement but no, I am not a doctor, just a patient with way too much time on his hands 🙂

But you are in luck! All of us have been where you are, so I decided to put together a video presentation just for you and others like you. I am sure it will be very helpful and you will likely be able to teach your doctor a thing of two as well. And for the record, I do not get paid in anyway for the videos I put together, I'm just trying to give back to the community that helped me.

Since you took Prolia I would not quit until your doctor takes you off safely. Weight training is the best treatment. It makes your core stronger and your overall muscle strength.

Does the amount of water you drink to take the pill affect its efficacy?

No. Water generally helps with absorption.

I had progress after 2 years with Alendronate and then loss at the next DEXA scan after the next 2 years. I was taken off of it right away and am now on Evenity.

How is Evenity going?
