Has anyone experienced incontinence after HOLEP surgery?

Posted by azfox66 @azfox66, Mar 6 8:32pm

I recently had HOLEP surgery at the end of 2024. One of my main issues nine weeks later is incontinence or leakage. Been doing kegels but it still persists. Has anyone else experienced this and for how long?

My urologist did a cystoscopy about 2 months ago and said everything looked good and that is the reason he has me seeing the infectious disease doctor. Hoping this surgery gets you back to 100%.

You should get a second opinion. My Dr. was a marvelous too. Dr slade Boise Idaho. I flew from Hawaii to see him.

I too flew from Hawaii to have HoLEP surgery with DR. Slade after you, mine was on May 9th. He was very nice and caring during the surgery and for a few weeks afterwards he checked in on me.
My healing process is going extremely slow at over 7 weeks post surgery now. I’m still experiencing over active bladder symptoms and stress incontinence so bad that I have to use 4-6 heavy duty pads per day. When I sit or lay down I have zero leakage so I’m thankful for that. At around 5-6 weeks post surgery I started passing bladder stone and crystal clusters, I barley felt them passing, this indicates to me that the valve at the bottom of the prostate was made too large. My nerves and muscles at the bladder neck as well as the bottom valve were shocked really badly. I’m doing tons of kegals and doing Tens tibial verve stimulation. I’m also drinking Varuna bark tea that has been used for 3000 years to treat OAB.
My only option to talk to the Dr. now is to leave comments on his HoLEP You Tube video.

I am so sorry to hear about some of the complications you are experiencing. I’m confused that you only have communication with him on his YouTube.
I’m not sure how or why they wouldn’t have but Dr. Slade and his office information are on all his emails if he has called you, his number should be on your caller ID
Our experiences differ because I had no underlying experience no stones and the major issue was my median lobe , so I had a little less done than the entire prostate removal. I’m sure if you call the phone number to his office they will respond.

I was told that he would call me but he never did. I guess he is too busy to return my call and feels that he can do nothing for me since he is not licensed to practice in the state of Hawaii. The last time I had talked to him he had told me that by 6 weeks I should start see a change and by 8 weeks pretty much over it. On his YouTube video he now told me it will take up to 3 months and other option are available if it doesn’t stop leaking. The options I looked into aren’t that great, like the artificial sphincter that has a switch in your nut sack. Or the mesh support that sometimes has a big failure rates and can make you worse or fillers to plump up the muscle that can migrate, some are made out of polymers that are not supposed to migrate but I don’t feel safe having a new product made from plastic injected into that area, what if it needs to be removed when found to cause cancer? If they put too much filler it can cause the valve to not open enough to pee, then they have to insert a catheter tube.

Forgive my candor, but I m skeptical to what you’re saying and reason being is , Dr Slade has an unblemished record for calling his patients back , and in his absence his staff will do it . You may need to reflect that you’re slowly but surely saying ( with knowledge beforehand that you don’t live in Idaho) somehow you’re getting ghosted by Dr Slade.

My other question is, why are you communicating with him publicly about your confidential information?

I don’t know your psychological profile so I can’t assess as to what you say these things or feel that way other than you’re probably sick and tired of your condition

If you had underlying conditions that made the the procedure minimally successful, I’m sure you were told before the procedure.

I wish you the best of luck and I hope you recover completely as close to complete as possible

I am 7 months post HOLEP. I have been wearing men’s diapers up until 2 weeks ago when I started wearing just pads. I started with using 6-7 diapers per day and kept getting better. I am the one off. Most people (according to my doctor) are back to normal within 6 months. So glad I am not wearing the plastic diapers in this heat. I did kegals for 6 months. It worked for me. Wishing you the best.

Thank for your input, I am glad that you’re seeing a change in your condition. I’ll try to hang in there, I was starting to have thoughts of how I would end my life.

I was told by the clinic that Dr Slade is not licensed in Hawaii and he can’t legally prescribe me meds or act as a doctor while I’m in Hawaii. I did contact the clinic and described what I was going through and was told that he would call and he didn’t. The last conversation over the phone with him before that he wasn’t able to or didn’t want to tell me the reasons for what I was going through, which was false urgency’s to pee and what I called at the time cramps right afterward, which are really strong contractions. He only was able to tell me in a few week more that I would see a change, but no change happened. He did mention at the beginning of the call that he has clinics and surgery and a very busy schedule and with our time difference it’s hard to find the right time to call.
I was not told that I would have a longer recovery time for any special reason. I was told the same thing that he says on his video, many patients get better in 2-3 weeks or sometimes 6-8 weeks and then only a few 3 months. I had some bladder small stones and lots crystals which he knew about beforehand and said that they would pass later after the surgery he said they flushed some of them out during the surgery.
I made my comments publicly because I felt like it was only way I could get a response and also people need to know that having this operation has more risks then all the you tube videos lead you to believe.

Well, unfortunately, your opinion is based on frustration, which is understandable, but it doesn’t excuse in my view. The fact that you’re trying to blame this doctor in one form or another in regards to the outcome. People who question their doctors and lawyers only after they get the services, leaves an “awkward”mist in the air. I realize that I’m speaking from the standpoint of somebody who is completely cured. But I already knew that there was a big chance I could be standing where you are right now and I don’t think that I would be badmouth in the Doctor Who tried to save me. I could’ve just lived with it.

Since you asked there is one possibility as to why the operation had unfavorable results.
The operation was scheduled for Friday at 11:30 am, there was a hold up with the operating room and I didn’t get wheeled in until around 1:30 PM in the afternoon. The Dr. assured me they would not rush and they would take their time as usual. Shortly after waking up I was given what supposed to be a picture of my prostate. Even though I was still groggy I noticed right away that the name on the picture wasn’t mine. The nurse rushed out to find out what happened and came back about 10 minutes later and said they had forgot to set up my name in the computer for the photo and laughed it off and said they were going to have a hard time billing the insurance on that one. She cut off the name and handed me back the photo. Hmmmmm!
I am not accusing the Dr. of making or doing intentional rush job on me. I like Dr Slade, he is a great guy with a good beside manner. But now that you brought this up it makes me wonder what other settings were done wrong. Was everyone there thinking about getting home to dinner and a night out?
They say to never buy a car built on a Friday, maybe that goes double for HoLEP on Friday afternoon's
