Sorry to hear the meds are no longer working, @vincev700. Are you seriously considering surgery at this point? What is your doctor recommending you do with the meds not having the same effect?
My Gastrologist said strangulation could occurs if I didn’t have surgery. Unfortunately three month after surgery the hiatal hernia is back. Has anyone else had to do a redo?
Hi, @msturcken - how unfortunate you have to have the hiatal hernia surgery all over again after only three months.
Did your gastroenterologist explain how strangulation might occur if you didn't have a redo of the hernia surgery? Did he or she indicate in what timeframe they'd recommend you have this additional surgery?
In my case, the pain was so severe I had no choice but to have an emergency Nissen fundoplication procedure before I could research surgeons with the best success rate for me to use for my procedure. My hiatal hernia procedure failed, and I have not been able to eat normally for over 2 years and will go thru the day-to-day pain for the remainder of my life. You need to quiz the prospective surgeon about their success rate. Particularly if any of their patients ended up with Vegas nerve damage which is irreversible and unfortunately, I have. Best of luck.
I had one in 2011, had surgery. Now last year in December I was in the hospital with a small bowel obstruction due to adhesions from previous abdominal surgery. It sucks. They stated only way to fix it is more surgery which can also lead to more adhesions. There are risks with every abdominal surgery and there are risks if you don't do it. Then suddenly years later you also have complications from surgery. It did help with my hernia though. My sister had the same one, same doctor even.. years later she had severe problems due to the mesh bunching up inside her some how. She had to have another surgery, which it was difficult to find a surgeon who would even touch it, and they replaced it with pig skin. She has been gone since.

Oh no she is still alive. Since having the mesh replaced with pig skin she has had no more complications so far thank God. My complications were that the hernia repair caused a lot of serious adhesions in my intestines. I was never informed that this was a possibility from surgery. Apparently it is. So this cause my intestine to kink and pretty much bunch up to the point it caused an obstruction. This is where everything can't pass through the way it should. I had stomach cramping which could only be described by me as the feeling of labor during child birth. Severe cramping that would come and go every minute or 2. They attempted to use an NG tube to relive some symptoms and could not get one through my nose. Eventually it resolved itself but an obstruction can become life threatening. I have since had to meet with a nutritionist at mayo and change my diet. It has been a learning process and by the grace of God and mayo clinics guidance I have not had another one yet.

I see the surgeon in two months and think she will schedule the surgery then. I just want to get it over with. Recovery took about 3 weeks . No he didn’t explain strangulation but I don’t want it. You can die from it
I underwent hiatel hernia surgery several years back. The 100% wrap immediately failed, then 2 more attempts failed. I have an extended stomach, constipation and gastroparesis since then. From all of the prodding and probing I've gone through along with hours of my personal research, suggests my Vegas nerve was damaged during the procedure thus all of the issues I am experiencing. My suggestion is due diligence on the potential physician you select to do the surgery by checking their past patient's success rate to determine if any of them experienced a damaged Vegas nerve. I understand attempts to rectify a damaged Vegas nerve have a low percentage of success. Good luck and let us know what you decide.

1 Reaction@shaleenv - I'm really sorry to hear about the complications from your hernia surgery.
Will you share more about what these complications have been like? Also wondering about your sister and her surgery. Are you saying she passed away?
