Long term Statin use and PMR

Posted by lhhr @lhhr, Jun 18 10:35am

Hi.
I was diagnosed with PMR 4 months ago. So painful. I’m taking prednisone and meloxicam. I’m wondering if my 12-15 years use of statins could have triggered this. I won’t see my dr for another 4 weeks and I will ask him, but I’m curious to hear from others.
Thank you.

I had been taking Lipitor until my CK levels started to rise so my PCP took me off statins until my CK levels returned to normal range.
Then was switched to Crestor low dose ( 5 mg every other day) and I remained OK at that dose for years.
I went to a cardiologist who increased my dose of Crestor to 10 mg daily. Within 20 days I could barely move. Shoulder girdle pain, hips, hamstring pain etc.
I advised her I was not going to continue with any statin.
I waited 4-6 months and my pain never subsided. My PCP said I probably developed PMR. He said” I’ll put you on Prednisone and you should feel better in 3 days if it’s PMR. “. Three days later I felt great!
I’m still tapering from 15 mg/ day currently at 5 mg/ day and do bloodwork tomorrow to see if we adjust down from there? My PMR directly followed my bumped up statin dose. I was taking CoQ10 etc. to mitigate any statin side effects during this entire episode. A

I do know that my long terms statins had raised my CK levels to levels that suggested it was statins. My myalgia had put me in the ER with a frozen spasming lower back. My myalgia over the years has increased to most of my body but Internists doesn't have an answer based on "normal" bloodwork. My CK blood work goes up and down, so not sure why he won't take that into consideration that something is going on. He considered polymyalgia but CK and C Reactive Protein was "normal". I do have autoimmune disease and wonder if I should just go to a rheumatologist to make sure it isn't fibromyalgia or polymyalgia. Chronic fatigue, pain. I am checking on Lyme disease also.

I have read post for years on different sites about if this or that has caused or triggered PMR. It really doesn’t matter what triggers it. It’s something we have to deal with. I have 3 friends that had it for less than a year. But I’ve had PMR since 2011. I have been on a statin for 3 years. If I stopped it then there’s consequences of that. I did start KEVZARA in December and was able to wean off prednisone in May Just hoping that in a year I can get off the biologic.
