Does anyone have a solution to help manage Reclast side effects?

Posted by dingus @dingus, Aug 15, 2024

Does anyone have a solution to combat Reclast side effects. I had the infusion a year and a half ago and the side effects started shortly after I had the infusion. I still have weak legs, swelling in feet, pain in bones, dizziness (serious dizziness), cold sweats, tired all the time and nervous twitching in bones. Any suggestions?

It has been 12 months since I had my first and last infusion. The pain and discomfort has decreased some. I find the more active I am the less it hurts. There are better days and some not so good days and the pain can come on very quickly. My worst is when I wake in the morning; almost impossible to move my shoulders. I have an Australia Shepherd that loves to greet me in the morning and will often use her nose to nudge my shoulder, so I have to sit up immediately or the pain is severe. I love my K9 so I never scold, I just know my day has started! My endocrinologist says this is not from the refusion and I should see a Rheumatologist , which he scheduled for me; 01/29/2026. I am in hopes this pain is gone by then. An Endocrinologist pharmacist says the infusion is active for about 18 months and recommend that I have another infusion, Not me until they can prove different! I have had Bladder Cancer 5x over the past 15 years from Zantac, I’m done putting stuff into my body that is supposed to help but has all these potential side effects that I seem to acquire! Hope you feel better soon!

I had very severe reactions to Reclast. The FDA insert said to expect some joint pain 2-3 days after, which I had. Then, things were ok for about a week and a half. Then, one morning, I woke up in severe joint pain ALL OVER! It was so bad, I could not get out of bed. Called my endocrinologist and of course, she said she’s never heard of this. I read the FDA Drug insert for Reclast and yes, there were a percentage of patients with this severe joint pain following the IV Infusion. All I can say is I will never, ever take that infusion again!
I believe each one of you saying you had pain after this infusion. It’s poisonous!

I had my first injection last Tuesday. Wound up in the emergency room at the hospital on Wednesday. My muscle spasms in my back and around my ribs was so severe. I had to go to the hospital. They put me on muscle relaxers which I’m taking. Now I noticed my wrist and my fingers on my right hand all swollen. Had to go to the emergency room to get my ring off of my ring finger. My joints hurt in my wrist and my fingers. I go to my endocrinologist tomorrow and I’ll bet he’ll say that’s not from the clap. I was perfect till I Took that infusion. Eight hours later I had chosen fever. Then all this pain started. I needed help getting out of the bed. I just hope this is a temporary reaction.

I thought it was me. I had my first Reclast infusion in February of 2025. I had no flu symptoms afterwards but after about a month or two I started having what I would describe as bone pain in both arms, my hands, and shoulder. I never had anything like this before the infusion. I’m not so sure I would have another infusion for fear of having repeat side effects. My doctor never told me this would happen and when I reported it he said that yes bone pain could occur within a month and a half but would only last about three weeks. Not so. It’s May and I still have the discomfort intermittently. Great! Very discouraging to be in such pain.

I understand how you feel. My reaction to Reclast is delayed for a month after I get it and then I have side effects of very painful joints on and off during the year. I apparently have to take it as the result of having had one year of Prolia. My best advise is to be sure hand drink at least 48 ounces of water the day before the infusion and make sure the doctor orders the infusion to be given slowly for one hour and that they flush the tubing afterward. Good Luck !
Let me know how you are doing !

I have done everything you have suggested and I appreciate your response. Sometimes the bone pain is very bad. I have to get up and move, if that makes any sense. It’s certainly annoying. I’m wondering if I’ll ever take this infusion again.

My experience is similar in that the bone discomfort, all in my right leg, is worse at night and it helps to get up and move around. Walking seems to disrupt it though an arthritic knee flare up can complicate that, too. Both are issues since having my first and only Reclast infusion 18 months ago. These episodes sometimes come out of the blue, lasting a week or several and go away just as quickly. Best wishes to all to come through these challenges as they can be life altering.

My doctor gave me a short prescription, 5 or 6 days, of Prednisone. It stopped the bone pain & it didn't come back.

I previously posted that I had a bad reaction to my first (and last) infusion of Reclast on 3/25/25. It caused my left eye to swell shut over the course of a week, starting the day after the infusion. I did not get any response from the office that administered it--an arthritis center I was referred to by my provider. The local emergency dept. said it was an allergic reaction to something (not the Reclast) and prescribed me an antihistamine and a stomach pill, both of which are listed on my daily medication list--meaning I already take them. Thankfully, after going to my eye doctor a week after the infusion, he agreed that my issues were more than likely due to the infusion. He did other tests to rule out other causes, but he prescribed me a week of 40mg. Prednisone and Prednisone eye drops, which slowly relieved the situation.
Fast forward nearly 3 months and I started having flu symptoms starting about midday on 6/18,25. The pain and aching became so bad, I had to use a walker for 2 days. My knees were the worst affected, and my doctor said it was possibly because I had both knees replaced and this is where the inflammation was most noticeable. I was again prescribed Prednisone (a tapered course) and my left knee began to respond within hours. The right knee is better, but still very sore. Of course, the doctors are still monitoring this in case there is an infection involved. But, they are reasonably sure this was caused by the Reclast infusion nearly 3 month ago. What next?!
