How much time do you spend managing bronchiectasis?

Posted by bronchiectasaurus @bronchiectasaurus, Jun 11 9:26am

I conservatively estimate I spend 2 hours a day doing lung protocol stuff for my bronchiectasis. That includes at least 2 long saline nebulizer/Aerobika sessions, 2 nasal lavages, and rinsing, boiling, sanitizing, prepping (such as boiling, cooling, and storing distilled water for nasal lavage), and other maintenance.

I have — or had — 16 waking hours in a day. With all the lung stuff I now have 14. My day has been reduced by 12.5%. It’s worth it, to be able to breathe and reduce respiratory infections, but it has a real impact.

Thank you! I soak my aerobika in clear Dawn and agitate it, followed by the Bololo sterilizer. But, as is common to find out with the management of this disease, there’s always more one can do!

I'm less concerned about the Aerobika than I am the Vortex chamber (can't boil it) and nebulizer - apparently Monaghan uses a special plastic that doesn't harbor NTM. But I do brush it out because once in a while I cough into it as I am blowing...

Hi, Sue.
I bought the Vortex specifically as it can go in the bottle sterilizer, unlike other spacers. But the Pari info here also says it can be boiled, in case that is helpful:

Thank you, Roz,

I appreciate the information. I will give her a call. Not sure yet if I will do zoom or in person?

I don't use a Pari, but I do boil my nebulizers - just a cheapo reusable from the medical supply. After 8-10 sessions boiling, I usually toss. Or I will take the old ones (boiled) along on a trip, use and wash each for a couple days, then toss. It is easier than trying to disinfect along the way unless we are in our camper, where I am set up to do it easily.
I know the vortex tube can be boiled, but I have had bad luck with the internal silicone flap thingie closing right after doing it.

Right now it's only Zoom since she's in Washington state for the summer. I'm not sure if she continues Zoom once she gets back to Arizona. She'll tell you. Do you live in Arizona?

Im not sure if she continues with Zoom once she's back in Arizona where she teaches in a studio. Obviously, she'll tell you.

Where do you live?

I have a set of 5 long-handled bottle/nipple/drinking straw brushes on a ring. No idea where I got them - I use several in cleaning my devices.

PS I sanitize the brushes (along with our dishes, glassware, cutlery and almost everything else) in my dishwasher on the hottest setting, which maintains temps of 165-180F for 30 minutes. We were able to measure the internal temp with an industrial calibration probe my husband has had for many years.

Hey Sue, I have to ask this question to you because I do value your knowledge and excellent ideas, can all nebulizers be sterilized using a good quality baby bottle sterilizer??? I’ve heard some people say yes, and some say no. Dr.’s, RRT’s RN’s etc what is your opinion

Roz - That can be really frightening the first time it happens! It is truly a mixed blessing - we know we need to eliminate the mucus, but it sure interferes with life doesn't it?
Have you been diagnosed with MAC/NTM? Have you done a sputum culture lately? Now might be the perfect time, since your body is naturally producing mucus for you to submit.

PS Now, years after infection and treatment, I seldom produce much mucus. So I have a standing order from my pulmonologist to submit 3 specimens whenever I can produce them. We are in a hot, humid, smoky, high-pollen situation right now, so I will be doing extra nebs this weekend trying to get a good sample.

Hi Sue,
Thanks for this response and for all your responses which have been very educational for me.
I am planning to talk to the office tomorrow and to ask for another sputum culture. The first one was about five months ago and grew nothing. Hence, I have not been diagnosed with MAC/NTM. Actually, pretty frightened about that. Sounds like many people do convert. When I asked my pulmonologist what my prognosis was, she said Very Good. Maybe it's because I am so old already that the time for it to develop is lessened. At my age there is a lot of other stuff going on with my body.
I am flying to the Bay Area in two weeks, the first time I have traveled with the BE diagnosis. I'll be staying with my daughter. I did get my latest Covid vaccine about a month ago. My family knows I have something but have not shown much curiosity about it. My oldest son who was the glue for the family died almost a year and a half ago. It has changed my inner life unimaginably.
I am very active and will keep walking if it is loosening the mucus. I would keep walking anyway. It's what I've done for about 45 years.
I can't believe I wrote so much. Thanks for your wisdom.
