What to eat after the Whipple

Posted by katieliz @katieliz, Jun 13 2:05pm

Diagnosed with Pancreatic cancer 5 months ago, and now had the Whipple procedure. Wondering about foods recommended for the first 4-6 weeks, and then afterward.

Has anyone been given the okay to eat without first taking the prescribed enzymes? Got our of the hospital earlier today with ZENPEP script needing to transferred as hospital pharmacy did not have it. And have not found it anywhere else, guess I’ll now eat something and take my chances, until we can find the med. I had the Whipple on June 10.

ask your care team... They can usually suggest something... Sometimes they have samples they can give you until you get going on a supply.

Good to know about the sausages and pepperoni.... I always take off any pepperoni...but, have kept the sausage... hmmm... Is there a better meat or should one eliminate any pizza meat.? Stick with veggie?

THANKS , BETTE DAVIS

Chicken is a possibility on pizza as well as turkey pepperoni if you are making homemade pizzas. Most of the groceries sell the turkey pepperoni and it’s actually quite good. We’ve bought 90% lean hamburger for topping some of our pizzas and along with some other good ingredients and spices, you can make a pretty good homemade pizza. Some pizza places use ground beef/hamburger anyway so it’s wise to ask!

All the zenpep does is provide the mechanism for the adsorption of nutrients out of the food you take in. Are you with a partial pancreas still or without it totally as I am. Without the zenpep, if you are w/o a pancreas, you basically are just passing the food through your system w/o adsorbing any of the nutrients from the food. If you’re still with a partial pancreas then you are providing some digestive enzymes and the zenpep is just being used as a supplement to what you can still produce. Best to find it and take them with your meals and snacks as suggested by your surgeon.

Altered sense of taste, good way to put it! People have asked me about this and I’ve tried to explain it, but hard to get it across. I will look for that shake, but sadly, we no longer live near a Publix- and we miss it! I have seven more rounds of chemo after I have some recovery time from the surgery, so that definitely changes my taste!

Yep, the taste of everything changes with chemo. I even had some issues with taste after my scans when they administered the contrast by IV. Please know that I’ve had 8 rounds of chemo in three different periods. 3 back in November, two in February and three in late march/early April. After and during each session I had a very metallic taste in my mouth as well as a funky sensation like I had just eaten something that was greaser oil coated giving me a coated sensation in my mouth. Another thing that got to me was drinking tap water out of the faucet. It had a very metallic taste about it too so I switched to drinking water out of the fridge door or bottled water. This was very h!

My surgeon told me after my 12 day hospital stay to get right back to the diet that got me there. Advised to eat what sounded good but do it in moderation for the first month then move on to bigger portions, just be observant of anything that doesn’t sit well with you now vs. before and maybe cut back on it or eliminate it.

Thank you. Yes, after calls to different pharmacies and on hold, and explaining the situation 8 hrs at leastI’d say, over 2 days, I found the medication.
I was told if my food choices - though I’m trying - have much fat, the ZENPEP is helpful.
