What should i do? My vision is deteriorating

Posted by ariza9110 @ariza9110, Sep 16, 2024

Hey so I started having blurry vision where my vision would unfocus and become blurry 1 year ago since I started wellbutrin, 6 months ago at least I went off it and my vision improved but not fully resolved, 3 months ago I caught flu/covid and since then my vision problems became severe, my vision unfocus every 1 second to the point I feel half blind, I went to a eye doctor which didn't do a eye test with dialate drops since I already had one 7 months ago but did the basics without dialation and sent me to do oct test which I am doing tommorow, I am really scared that I am going blind and dont know what going on.

I guess my husband and I have been pretty lucky with the doctors we’ve had.

I’ve occasionally stopped going to a doctor that I didn’t like, but for the most part, I haven’t been harmed and they haven’t seemed motivated by money above all else.

I also had laser surgery for acute angles. My doctor was fantastic. Very caring, very competent, and I’ve never had a problem with the holes he lasered into my eyes. Occasionally, I’ll see a starry glare, like with headlights, or streetlights, but it’s not too disruptive.

We’ve been going to the same GP almost our entire married life. He has become a personal friend. For years, he treated our family for “free”. My husband bartered computer help for our healthcare. Just recently, in casual conversation, he noticed a dark spot on my husband’s face and told him he needs to get it checked out. It turned out to be a skin cancer that the dermatologist didn’t even catch.

My husband has prostate cancer in his family, and has had trouble with that, although not cancer yet. But he went to a urologist for years trying to manage an enlarged prostate. That doctor did not steer him wrong. And when my husband went a long time without seeing him once, when he finally did go to an appt., the doc asked why it had been so long. My husband told him that we were having some legal and financial trouble and he couldn’t afford it. The doctor said, “don’t ever do that again. If you can’t pay, I won’t charge you.”

I have had a couple of bad experiences with doctors and, in general, I don’t just take what they say at face value. I do my own research and I don’t do everything the docs recommend. But I wouldn’t say they are all in it for only money.

You have indeed been one of the lucky ones. Your comment is why I said “most” in my first reply to the original post. I know many more who have not been so fortunate.

My husband will not go to a dr even if he needs to because of what he has seen what I have been through.

I do not want to be so jaded, but too many have suffered at the hands of drs who have not been held accountable because people assume they can be trusted. Not all can.

Eyes affect the brain for sure. That is a fact. I wish I had never seen an eye dr and just dealt with the dry eye issue. I was very fortunate to have better than perfect vision until I was lied to and had an LPI. Destroyed my vision.

I hope you find an honest dr and be very careful about trusting them to do procedures that will make you even worse.

They all agree that you should seek medical care from a top notch specialist if that is possible - sooner than later.

It's understandable that you're scared. I hope you are able to get an earlier appointment or to be seen by urgent care if things get worse.

How are you doing today?

@arisza9110, an eye clinic or Urgent Care might get you a sooner appt; can your primary care doctor push for a appt even if with another eye doctor? I sometimes find "wtf" helpful, better than letting stress build up. I have some damage to my optic nerves (no pain), and as of this year, severe dry eye and (no symptoms) dry AMD. My dry eyes hurt and are blurry if I don't use Refresh or Systane preservative-free (PF) eye drops or eye gel (my eyes react to Visine or cheap eye drops). In the off chance this helps, if one's eyes dry out, we are blind. Is your vision worse if there is air flow (eyes dry out faster). My vision is normal as long as I use PF eye drops, otherwise it drops to 20-40 and worse, and my eyes are blurry, and feel gritty, and swollen. I now use a heated eye mask to hopefully increase oil production from the glands at the base of eye lashes (otherwise eyes dry out faster), and clean my lids with OcuSoft or gentle soap (mites can cause eye problems). Since you said the diagnosis was normal, that suggests no macular drusen or associated AMD (which also wouldn't cause the pain). My husband get retinal migraines, but your doctors should have noted that. He treats them with avoiding stress, wearing dark glasses outside, and resting for 20 min until they are gone. https://my.clevelandclinic.org/health/symptoms/24262-blurred-vision

Yes…I would also be very concerned if eyes suddenly got worse!

What Kay said is very correct. Dry rye and mites are common issues. Has an eye dr ruled that out yet? Dry eye is very hard to deal with and I use warm compresses as well. If that helps some, that is a good way to test if dry eye is the main culprit first. Of course drs will also say age is a factor as well.

I wish you luck and hope you find a good dr. They are very hard to find. Best advice I can give to anyone is to do lots of research snd get other opinions before letting them do ANY kind of procedure.

I agree with Colleen that you need to go to a top notch optamologist who has the necessary experience. Concider going to one the top eye research centers in the US such as Bascom Palmer or Wills. They will spend a whole day examining your eyes and make recommendations for your specific condition and they may be able to recommend a local doctor for you if you ask. I have been to Bascom Palmer 4 times in the past 30+ years as I fight glaucoma. I currently go to recommended eye doc who did fellowship at Bascom Palmer. I'm 80 now and have lost central vision in left eye and have about 50% of field left in right eye. I'm on 3 eye drops: Pilocarpine, Dorzolomide, and Rocklan.

Thank you for mentioning the Wills in Philadelphia. I have been considering making a trip to be examined. Does anyone have any thought about Cleveland Clinic Eye Center. I have Fuchs Disease, supposedly mild but needs to be watched. I need a very good Opthamologist with experience in cataracts and Fuchs Disease.
