Hello all! I haven't posted here in quite a long time. I was diagnosed back in April with complicated diverticulitis to include a perforation. Antibiotics helped as did pain medication, but my VA doctor and surgeons at the VA and outside hospitals all recommended a sigmoidectomy to remove that section of colon. I am currently scheduled for a robotic procedure on July 9th. I've read various recovery descriptions online and was wondering what others have experienced? My past medical history is a bit complicated. I've had several (4+) abdominal surgeries in the last 15 years that have caused a lot of scar tissue. My surgeon thinks he'll still be able to do it via the robot, but said it definitely increases my chances of having the surgery converted to an open procedure. Has this happened to anyone else? Also contributing to this is a previous history of an ileus after a laparotomy.

Being a government employee, my recovery time currently will likely be shortened due to the need to be in the office. I have the full support of my supervisors to take as much time as I need, but I don't see that lasting if I'm out more than 4 weeks. What can I expect for a typical recovery time?

Hi, @sullyinct - great to see you posting here again on Mayo Clinic Connect. Welcome back.

So you could chat with others who have had diverticulitis and a sigmoidectomy, I moved your post here so you could talk with members such as @linda82 @speedbird @andoman @ppat4pr @catherine1290. They can provide some support and let you know what they or a loved one experienced as far as recovery time. @foxj @astaingegerdm also may have some input for you as you get ready for your surgery in July. Others who are also getting ready for sigmoidectomy can talk about preparation for this surgery alongside you.

@jillyg - have you now had this surgery?
