Has Anyone Had Dental Work (implant, extraction) and Not Gotten ONJ??
Having dental work -- specifically, a tooth extraction or an implant -- is supposed to be a risk factor for ONJ if you are on a bisphosphonate or other antiresorptive medication. I was wondering if anyone in this forum has had this kind of dental work but NOT gotten ONJ. My brother has been on Prolia for several years and had extensive dental procedures to extract teeth and put in dentures, but has not had ONJ. As you might guess, I am posing this question because of fears of taking a bisphosphonate after being on an anabolic agent (Tymlos). That is required to prevent loss of the newly formed bone.

I was on Prolia for 10+ years and now on Reclast for nearly two. I had to have an extraction and bone graft about a month ago and was very nervous. My endocrinologist was not concerned and advised that the periodontist prescribe antibiotics. I have come through this without any adverse consequences.
Thank you for sharing this information, mfitz41!! Reclast is a strong bisphosphanate, so I am happy to hear that you have had now issues. Like you, I am very nervous about this drug, recommended by my doctor -- in case I have to have a dental extraction, since I have very bad teeth :(. You must be so relieved!! Glad it worked out well for you!!
I’ve had 2 teeth removed and 2 implants without issue.
Thank you for this information. May I ask what drug you were taking -- one of the bisphosphonates? or Prolia? And for how long? Thank you!!
