Allergy, lung infection or something else??
For a few months now (at least two or three, I've had what people are saying is just allergies. I have never had allergies in my life (now 74 years), but now have stuffiness in head, wheezing, excessive coughing, and lately, a heaviness in breathing. I have an inhaler that I just started using and helps a bit but I'm not sure this is an allergy. No watery eyes, or runny nose at all, but I definitely sound nasally. I just walked up the hill from my pottery shop and was huffing, puffing, coughing and wheezing to the point of concern. Does this sound like allergies? Or does it sound more like a lung infection? My doc gave me a prescription for singular yesterday and we are picking it up this morning. She is 3 hrs away so our visits are virtual. I think I might need an x-ray. Is that a good idea, or should I just sit tight and try the singular?

I’m glad you are seeing the doctor to be safe, in my limited experience allergies don’t really cause coughing unless it’s post nasal drip, I think it’s good to have an X-ray or perhaps a ct scan which shows more detail but the main thing is that you get it checked out, best wishes.
ckoehring, Bless you. I have horrible allergies & asthma. This has been the hardest spring I have ever had.
I would push for the chest x-ray. Personally, it does sound like allergies have caused asthma. Wheezing can be
a sign of asthma....it was with me. You may need to go on a nebulizer with steroids or a steroid rescue inhaler to get relief. Don't forget to rinse your mouth after each use with the nebulizer or inhaler if it has steroids in it
as it can cause thrush in your mouth if you don't. Singulair works great for a lot of folks.
Allergies can happen at any age I'm afraid. Also, our allergies can change as we get older.
We have so many impurities in the air, fires in so many places in the US, floods that produce molds in the air, etc.,
Praying for you to feel better soon.
To all that are possibly experiencing allergies, try these steps:
1. Practice slow deep breathing. Fill your diaphragm and then lungs via your nose, exhale slowly via your mouth.
2. Cut down on carbs (bread, rice, pasta, pastries, etc.) Carbohydrates metabolize into carbon dioxide which can severely inhibit normal breathing.
3. Drink organic tart cherry juice, 4 oz. at breakfast.
4. Inhale aroma of thyme leaves before walking or exercising and as needed.
5. Drink 4 ounces of organic pomegranate juice after exercising.
6. Sleep with your head elevated.
7. Wear N95 mask during high pollen season. Milwaukee brand N95 is great.
Hope this helps!
I'm off all meds, including albuterol.

Sagan
I would certainly ask for a ct of lungs to rule in or out problems . Bless you , Crystalena
The wheezing and coughing is how my asthma presents. I resisted the diagnosis for a couple years but now use preventive Symbicort (genetic) twice daily (using a spacer) and Singulair for past year. I went 12 months without a flare up but 2 weeks ago the symptoms returned. I find that a short course of prednisone helps, along with extra rescue inhaler. I also have a nebulizer on hand for when the wheezing makes it too hard to effectively use the inhaler. Please get a chest xray and a CT scan to rule out more bad stuff.
I was on allergy injections for 15 + years, Through the VA hospital. Their process was so Slow, ever 3rd year I'd have to revert back to 2x injections per week because they delayed my authorization for services. Remember FREE Medical care, isn't always the BEST Care
Thank you. This is interesting and I will do my best.
Thanks everyone for all of your thoughts, and comments about your own experiences. I went to urgent care yesterday and they did a chest x-ray, which was normal. The doc there diagnosed asthmatic-type symptoms and noted the wheezing bilaterally by listening and was concerned about the excessing coughing. She wants me to get with my primary physician and get set up with further lung testing as she said my symptoms were going on too long.
She ordered prednisone 40mg per day for 3 days, then 30 for 3 days, 20 for 3 days, then 10 for 5 days. Also ordered cough pearls. She also has me starting the singular that my family doc recommended and my albuterol inhaler. I can feel that something is starting to kick in today, thank goodness as yesterday was terrible. I have been a potter for 25 years and it made me start to worry about silicosis. I will get the testing that is recommended for sure.
Glad you will go through with the testing. There are serious lung issues which need to be ruled out. Shortness of breath can have many causes. That requires a Specialist and not your Primary Care Doctor. They should also do a pulmonary function test which provides more information of potential cause such as Obstructive vs. Restrictive lung disease. The Prednisone will no doubt "perk you up".
Thank you, yes. It's day three now on the prednisone has kicked in and I feel so much better.
