Opinions for increased pain

Posted by susanpmr @susanpmr, Jun 13 10:27am

I am currently reducing prednisone, went down three days by .5 mg to 17. I woke up in bad pain and weakness. The only thing I did differently is moved a 33 pound of dog food and opened and closed windows. Any thoughts?

My suggestion to you would be to not do anything that is causing you extra pain. If it were me I would try to do things that were in my comfort zone according to my level of pain. Best of luck to you moving forward!!!

I have learned my lesson several times about trying to do to much. I woke up one morning last fall and couldn’t get my arms above my waist. I went to see an orthopedic doctor and he took all my blood markers which were normal. I couldn’t see a Rheumatologist until 5 months later who diagnosed the PMR. I am/was a daily walker and I usually walked 3 mile a day before the sudden weakness. Now I am lucky to get a mile before having to stop. I was started on 9 mg of prednisone and reduced to 7 and all the pain in my shoulders came back and the doctor increased me back to the 9mg with a longer taper. During this time I have also developed a persistent tightness between my shoulder blades and inner and outer hips. The doctor keeps telling me that is not a PMR result. He says only the outer shoulders and hip girdle are symptoms. I am trying to keep positive and reduce the prednisone and he has brought up Kevzara if I cannot taper this time. I am quickly learning that this PMR condition changes everything quickly.

It's fairly common to get a few temporary aches after a reduction, which usually resolve within a week or so. Also, as others have said, notice what your physical limits are and don't overdo it, especially not in the early part of a reduction when some temporary aches may appear. That's been my experience.

I had that tightness between the shoulder blades for 2 - 3 weeks. I couldn't sneeze during that time, because those muscles are required to sneeze. I definitely think those tight muscles were because of PMR.

Do a discussion search on here for “PMR prednisone taper”. There is a wealth of experience available for pain while taking/tapering prednisone that migjt be helpful.
Generally, if you have not been on a high enough dose for long enough, you will have problems if you try to taper.
What does your doc say ?
Good luck !

I also have had that tightness between my shoulder blades and it feels as if it's going to cramp, especially when I lay on my back. Can't stay in that position long. PMR is a strange disease and it affects people differently. We know our bodies better than the Drs and know when something is unusual or may not fit the textbook case. It doesn't mean it's not related to PMR. I also have had an achy feeling near my tailbone (initially) and pain not on the outer parts of my hips, but the inner parts. I've also had pain in the backs of my thighs, which isn't textbook. God created us all uniquely, and what may not affect one person, may affect another. It may help to keep a diary of activity/pain to see patterns.
