Gluteus Maximus Transfer Surgery - need surgeon recommendation please
does anyone know of a surgeon capable of doing this surgery IN a hospital? I was in a serious accident 8 yrs ago & had surgeries to fix other things but never a solution for hip. I've seen 10 surgeons in 2 states with 5 hospitals & clinics. I finally got a proper diagnosis and was scheduled for surgery BUT IT GOT CANCELLED & the surgeon is not doing it. HE Quit the cleveland clinic as Dir. of Hip Preservation and now is only doing out patient surgery at a boutique clinic. His outpatient surgery center will not take me - they said I must be an INPATIENT at a hospital. There is no surgeon I know of qualified to do this surgery and as an IN PATIENT at a hosptial in Cleveland area. I NEED A GLUTE MAX TRANSFER. MY GLUTEUS MEDIUS MUSCLE & TENDON ARE TORN OFF THE BONE AND COMPLETELY ATROPHIED FROM INJURY 2017. I HAVE SIGNIFICANT EDEMA AND FLUID IN GREAT TROCANTER BURSA.
I also have a labral tear but that is a separate surgery and not urgent at the moment. I am unable except with walk cuff crutches- and then only very short disatnces and in horrible pain 24/7. I was extremely active prior to injuries. Any surgeon recommendations? Please do not tell me to go back to this other surgeon. He said NO & is done.

Oh my, I know your pain. I searched the US for an orthopedic surgeon who was skilled and experienced w/ a treatment of a full-thickness gluteus medius tear and ultimately a gluteus maximus transfer and found Dr. Shane Nho at Midwest Rush Orthopedics, Chicago. He referred me to Dr. Robert Burnett. I meet w/ Dr. Burnett June 6, 2025 and schedule surgery soon after. You know this surgery is difficult, tricky and the rehab is long. So I wish you success with your search. There are only a few orthopedic surgeons who provide this difficult surgery. And I've come to believe that the success of the surgery depends on the experience and knowledge of the orthopedic surgeon. So the best of luck to you.
I had a Glute Maximus surgery at BJC hospital in St. Louis, MO. The surgeon was Dr. Cecilia Pascual Garrido and she is conducting a study on the success or failure of the transfer surgery which I volunteered to be involved in. You could also contact Dr. Devi Hunt
at BJC who will guide you to the surgeon you'll need and when to could occur.
About half their Glute Maximus Transfer surgeries are for someone not from St. Louis.
Thank you for posting. May I know the extent of your tear (that determined the need for a gl transfer)? Was it a full-thickness tear with fatty infiltration and atrophy of the gluteus medius--a worst case scenario? When was your surgery, year? and is/was your recovery successful i.e. improved gate, no need for support when walking, minimal to no pain, etc. And what age group might you identify w/. I posted above, did meet w/ Rush Orthopedic surgeon and flew back to east coast. Need to determine best option for myself and whether to accept that outcome is a 50-50 gamble :). Thank you for your response.
I had a Gluteus Medius ans Minimus seperation in 2021 and had surgery to reattach the two Glutes which I did in july of 2021. After 6-8 weeks of laying on my back doing nothing and six weeks of PT the separated again, but I wasn't;t aware of the problem. In 2020 I had the Gluteus Maximus transfer which initially felt better, but ended up with me not having great balance and needing a cane. I then had several meters pinched in L 3-4, and L4-5. I had these fixed in 2024, but then developed severe pain in the lower back. I'm in a study now on the Transfer surgery and will meet with them later today for the first time. I'll let you know what they say!
I'm sorry for this late response and so sorry for what you are experiencing. Can your Dr refer you to another surgeon at the Cleveland Clinic? That Clinic is one of the best in the world. Sorry I don't have more.
Can you talk to your former Dr to see if they will take you at his clinic anyway? You have a history with this person.
I wish you all the best.
Joe
I like medical centers that teach students. I myself M at UCSD in San Diego and I love my surgeon and skilled doctor teams who teach students. I love all the attention that I get from the fellows which are more sets of eyes on your problem. Teaching hospitals with good reputation’s are the best places. They give us confidence and they have innovative medicine like places like Kaiser do not. I use a lot of doctors at Ucsd and I have to navigate and take responsibility in a way sometimes that aggravates me. But when it comes to the nitty-gritty of my body‘s degeneration as I age, I love all the services and surgical doctors at Ucsd.
I'm following up on your mention of the study group and your participation. Do you have info to share? How many are participating? And is anyone waiting for a transfer? I look forward to your response.
I'm so sorry you are having these experiences. Can you please share what Doctors and hospital you feel you had successful surgery and/or where this transfer study is being done. I had an accident in 2017 that broke multiple bones on my right side. The torn, retracted, fatty atrophied glute medius wasn't' diagnoised until 2024. All the Drs kept saying Greater Trochanctor burstis but my ability to walk continued to decline & I did not respond to PT. I was supposed to have transfer surgery at the Cleveland Clinic but the only surgeon who could do it, quit. I need to find a surgeon who will in-patient surgery at hospital since I have an allergy to many general anesthia. I do have a 100% disability PTSD from accident but like you, I keep plugging along. If you can share anything, I'd appreciate it.
Several doctors at Barnes Jewish hospital in St. Louis do the Gluteus Maximus transfer with 50% of patients from other areas. Dr. Cecilia Pascual Garrido did mine. Contact BJC to make an appointment via phone.
Just started so no new info
