Gastroparesis and lactobacillus probiotic

Posted by denisef @denisef, Dec 19, 2022

I saw online that multispecies Lactobacillus probiotic might help with gastroparesis by increasing gastric emptying time. Has anyone tried it and if so did you notice any improvement in your symptoms???

Good to try the acupuncture (teas may be included). It really didn’t work for me (did it 3x), but that’s not to say it won’t for you. If you do it - stick with it & their diet recommendations.
Although my digestion is certainly slow, my stomach seems empty by evening. But getting up, moving around causes burping. Sometimes accompanied with slight headache tinges that come & go. I know I’m in trouble. Even if I think I’m
Ok, upon trying to sleep, I’ll feel & hear the familiar heart pulse in my ear, emanating into my head. Soon after, I’ll get these weird ‘ hills’ down along my left side (from side chest down to thigh). Then I know I’m sunk. Rounds of charcoal in water & deep Massaging of my stomach follows sitting in a chair. The gas will return & I’ll often not actually climb into bed til 4 AM or even later. As those symptoms buoy the night before, neither ginger or digestive tea or anything else I’ve found or been led to helps dissipate the building gas. Mind you, my symptoms never include nausea, acid reflex or such.

I can't believe a GI doctor can't figure out your problem. Maybe go to a doctor in a big city.

I take a low-dose Acidophilus-Lactobacillus capsule three times a day with a small meal and believe it has helped but I've heard others say it didn't help them so I guess it's an individual thing.

Gastroparesis can affect the whole body system but there doesn't seem to be a clear cause other than post-operative issues or diabetes (which affects the nerves including those in the GI tract and/or the vagus nerve.) But there are treatments for GP like diet management and short-term medication and many times they do help

I, too, experienced lousy follow-up and poor dietary advice after inpatient tests showed gastroparesis so had to research it myself with the help of my PCP and my nephrologist (I also have renal disease, diabetes, CHF, COPD, and other chronic conditions.)

I remember how scared I was when I couldn't eat and got so weak I couldn't function and landed in the ER about five times before they took it seriously and admitted me, gave me fluids and ran tests then put me on a clear liquid diet for a couple of days. The GI peeps followed up by handing me a diet which would have worsened my renal function and diabetes! No, thank you!

Too bad we have to be our own advocates when we feel ill and can't get appropriate medical help in a timely manner, if at all, but Google might be your best friend as long as you use trusted websites like the Cleveland Clinic or Mayo, etc.

Sending you healing thoughts and best wishes.

I have gasteroparesis and have it conquered by taking medication called Domperidone. Without it for 48 hours and I can’t function I get such pains in the stomach. I have been on it for over 20 years with no problems. I am not a diabetic and I have never had surgery other than endoscopy.

Hi, I added a photo of the place I get Domperidone. Your gastro doctor needs to fax to 1-877-815-0062 them the prescription then they mail it to your house in 4-8 weeks, as it comes from Australia or Canada. Hope this helps!

I get it on a prescription from my doctor. I understand that it is not readily available in the US. I am in Canada. Maybe his doctor can obtain it for him. Usually they do some uncomplicated heart tests first. Can you order prescriptions from Canada with a prescription from his doctor?

My daughter needs domperidone for gastroparesis and has taken it for years. Some docs will prescribe it and you have to get it from Canada as it is not FDA approved in US. There are also some GI docs who will precribe it to be obtained in US if an FDA protocol is followed, which was what my daughter did the past few years. Now the US supplier is no longer participating and she again is getting from Canada and prescribed by a Georgia GI doc. With gastroparesis this med is needed to help the stomach empty.
