Dr. Doug Lucas Has anyone here paid money to work with Dr. Lucas?

Posted by trixiegirl @trixiegirl, Jun 1, 2024

I have been following his Youtube channel, did his free masterclass and have learned a great deal. It is evident that he is highly intelligent, motivated, and ambitious. Today I listened to a 2022 podcast interview with him by a health/fitness professional in the UK (Tony Wingard with whom I am not familiar). I think this was just when the optimal bone health website was getting started. The interview is quite interesting as I learned a lot about Dr. Lucas’s background which I have not managed to find anywhere else. I was surprised to know that he was a professional ballet dancer for 2 years before going on to medical school because of his fascination with the muscular/skeletal systems. He also talks about how he moved from orthopedic surgeon to functional-anti-aging medicine and the influence of his wife who is a registered dietician. After listening to this podcast I do believe his main goal is to heal and teach. I like how he analyzes studies and updates information and recommendations.

trixiegirl,
it is really confusing.
Dr. Doug is thinking about Forteo. He leans to it as a first choice, though I suspect any prescription from him would come after a careful examination of the particulars in each patient.
At least to reconsider medication that halts or thwarts the normal process of bone acquistion as not the best we can accomplish is in line with his other healthful positions. So it's Forteo.
He has links for discounts that are tiny profits for him. But the guy is carefull collecting data to try and determine the best bone marker ratios.
It's hard to get away from the intense advertising for products like algaecal. From what I read it is a good product (trace amounts of lead aside), but very expensive. The cost, no doubt recovering the costly advertising campaign.
When your bones start dissolving it isn't as easy as just the rug being pull out from under you. These companies wouldn't be so lucrative if osteoporosis didn't make us feel desperate. There are too many at the ready, taking advantage.

Algaecal is like the pharmaceutical company - they don't care about you, they just want the profits. They have a slew of additives in their product. I went on that years ago prior to the added ingredients and lost bone density. Can't imagine what it would do to you now. A quality calcium is microcrystalline hydroxyapatite complex with D, magnesium, k1,k2 and boron. Also nothing with binders and fillers. Which most supplements tend to have these days. They all make money of everyone being sick. It is hard to stomach. Would be nice if Ellon Musk could find a cure -

Unfortunately it looks as though there is shortage of Doctors specializing in osteoporosis. I live in both NYC and San Francisco so had to have 4 of my Evenity treatments in San Francisco. Then 6 at NYU Langone. I had to have an initial appt with a Rheumatologist which was like $350.00 (Medicare paid) before she would agree to take me on for the monthly Evenity shots I need when out there. I called to get my Jan & Feb shots as I would be staying there during those months. I was told she has now gone "concierge" and it would cost be $4,000.00 a year to be her patient. I called UCSF to see if I could get a new patient appt with a new Rheumatologist and they told me no new patient appointments for 6 months! She also mentioned that all of the Rheumatologists in the area have all gone concierge. I called my Rheumatologist back and she kindly let me come for the Jan/Feb shots without have to join her $4,000/yr concierge fee. Also here in NY my Rheumatologist retired and it took them months to find a replacement as nobody is specializing in osteoporosis much.

I go to a doctor in NYC, but an endocrinologist. Mount Sinai. I think there are more endocrinologists treating osteoporosis.

Algaecal seems like overpriced nonsense to me, to be honest.

I ultimately had a preliminary meeting for ‘onboarding’ and was seriously considering joining; however, I found a Specialty Care medical team here in my own backyard that is going to optimize my hormones first. I have changed to a high protein diet and weight lifting (although very beginners level). I will try the BHRT for a year to track where I am at. My hope is to at least stabilize since I have trouble with tolerating meds due to size and my general composition (I take children’s dosages of even allergy medications) having a very sensitive nervous system. I am hopeful, but know it will be slow going. I have adjusted my expectations accordingly. The main reason I was considering Dr Lucas was for the hormone therapy. No one here in my area seems to believe in it. They are stuck on the Women’s Health Initiative study done back in the early 2000’s. I still belong to the OBH Collective and pay $45 dollars for access to nutrition and excercise classes. They also have a mindfulness module as well. Will see how it all goes.

Thank you so much for taking the time to report back. I am very glad you were able to find local medical providers who seem to have a more holistic approach. That would be my ideal scenario as well but I've not yet found a suitable team. By any chance are you anywhere near the Washington DC/Baltimore metro area? I'd be interested in talking to the folks you're working with. Thank you!

I live on the Central Coast in California. A barren wasteland for medical care. I had a former colleague mention a concierge service in my town that is not really advertised. It is run by a husband wife medical team who both burnt out on the current medical/pharmaceutical models. It only costs $129 per month which is much more affordable than OBH. The also compounds minerals for me as well. These types of services are available in the greater LA area but cost $1000 per month so in a sense I lucked out living in a small town. I also found a personal trainer in my area that is reasonably priced to assist with proper weight lifting techniques so I can load my spine safely. It took me almost two years to find this type of situation. I do believe these types of services are popping up all over the U.S. due to the dissatisfaction of many who cannot find appropriate help in standard medical facilities. As the popularity rises I hope they will become available more readily. We need advice that sometimes is outside of the box to treat a complex condition like OP. I wish you the best.

What brand of calcium do you take? Do you take other supplements do you take? So hard to find any information.

I have joined Dr. Doug's Healthspan Nation (I think it's 25/month USD). Weekly Wedensday Zoom meetings on different topics - you can ask questions. Very helpful to me.

So are you only getting Zoom meetings for your membership. I am wondering how much it is to work with the team to reverse osteoporosis. How does that work? Does he order test like a in person Dr?

I know someone who tried this program. She said that you get two very comprehensive blood tests six months apart. After each test, you meet with a PA who goes over the test and recommends supplements, hormones, etc—whatever your tests call for. You meet with a dietitian and a health coach, on a regular basis. There is also an exercise coach. All meetings are virtual. She was recommended a lot of supplements, oxytocin, BHRT. The blood tests are covered in the cost of the program but the supplementation is not and those add up. She didn’t choose to continue after the first year but felt it got her started on the right track. My feeling is that you are better off finding someone local to work with if you can.

I live in St. Petersburg Florida and am wondering if there is anyone in this group who lives near me. Maybe we could organize a strength training group for women with osteoporosis. I have a trainer in mind who I think would work with us. It would be less expensive that way and also provide support.

I take Bone Maximizer with MCHA by MRM - it contains all you need - D3, K1 & 2, Boron, Vitamin C, Phosphorus, magnesium, zinc and Calcium which is microcrystalline Hydroxyapatite - super absorbent. Two to three pills gives you the balance of what you need. Take 1 with lunch and 2 with dinner. I do take additional things in variation too.
