Is this age-related decline in GFR or kidney disease?
My gp says I do not have ckd. I am 73, no diabetes, no blood pressure issues. My gfr is 52 and my creatinine is 1.1. I am not overweight. He says it is due to age and we will retest in 3 monlths. I am really scared witless. His physicians assistant told me i have ckd.

Thanks. That's what I think will be my diagnosis. Its overwhelming because I thought I was doing everything I could to stay healthy. Exercise eating right etc. I just hope and pray I can maintain this for years. Just had a granddaughter would like th o keep up. Fingers crossed
Also, how old are you? Many physicians are using slightly lower gfr thresholds before diagnosing CKD for people over age 70. But relax and keep getting monitored,.
I'm 67 egfr went up on one month. I just don't understand when all is normal in blood test. Guess I'll just keep waiting for next test
I finally had to stop googling! I’m a retired RN, my brain has gone thru way too many scenarios.
So, decided to control what I could at this point.
I’m hydrating with water (70 to 80 oz/day per dr recommendation) and keeping daily protein intake to 40 mg or so of mostly plant and fish proteins.
I'm hydrating and trying to watch what I eat plus exercise. That's all I can do. What stage are you? I m beginning to think more people have this than know
GFR uses only creatinine because it's the one that is least effected by what you eat so it's considered the most reliable. That's what I was told anyway. I was also made aware that many consider Cystatin as a more relible gage than GFR
@aconsolmagno If you are confused about your kidney function, perhaps you are seeing a PCP and not a nephrologist. A good nephrologist will look at trends of Cystatin C and Creatinine markers. A good nephrologist also looks at trends in sodium, potassium, and phosphorus levels. All this will do is give your doctor an "E" stimate of your kidney function. The "ONLY" true kidney function tests are the iothalamate clearance and iohexol blood tests offered by Mayo and presumably at other great education hospitals like the Cleveland Clinic or Univ. of Michigan, etc. Employ a team of dietition, nephrologist, and PCP for overall care and reduce anxiety.. Lastly, as we age, kidney function can decline for some but many others remain unaffected. CKD is more commonly found in patients with Type 2 diabetes and/or heart related problems such as blood pressure. Beware as Google searches may yield "Garbage in, Garbage out". Trust your nephrologist or find another one.
@mimi1234 that eGFR of 62 is great!
BUT what did you say your creatinine is 9.6 ? That seems “waaaay” high! Is the decimal in the wrong place, is there a typo or did I misread it?
@aconsolmagno “creatine” do you mean “creatinine”? I hate it when words and spellings are similar and then autocorrect tries to help and sometimes screws everything up!
@aconsolmagno I’m not sure to whom you are asking “what stage are you?”. You can “at mention” which is the @ sign and the member’s handle if you want to direct a question to a specific member. That is what I did here in this comment to you. One of the volunteer mentors told me about this and I have found it quite helpful.
