What can I expect after my biopsy?

Posted by ericp502 @ericp502, Mar 28 9:39pm

51 year old and was diagnosed two weeks ago via MRI with a Gleason 7+ cancer.

MRI results below. Nothing was found in the lymph nodes or seminal sack. I have BPH on the Right side and that has been effecting me for several years.

LEFT PERIPHERAL ZONE: Ovoid focus at the lower 3rd peripheral zone measures up to 5 x 3 x 7 mm in largest AP, transverse and craniocaudal dimensions. This demonstrates diffusion restriction and low ADC signal. This does not enhance asymmetrically from the adjacent central gland. No other similar-appearing focus identified.

Prostate volume: The prostate measures 4.0 x 5.4 x 4.4 cm in largest AP, transverse and craniocaudal dimensions. This corresponds to a volume of 49.76 cc. Calculated maximum expected PSA of 5.97 ng/mL
IMPRESSION:
Suspicious diffusion restricting nodule in the left-sided peripheral zone at the apex. PI-RADS 4

I’ve been through multiple Urologists trying to get help with my enlarged prostate. The urologist I’ve had for 20+ years due to kidney stones wouldn’t give me a PSA because I was too young. He said to wait until I was 50 even though my father has prostate issues and he was my father’s urologist. My dad has had a PSA of 15 with multiple biopsy’s but no cancer found.

The second urologist did run my PSA and it was a 5. He did set me up for PSA screenings every six months but the only treatment he would do was prostate massages anytime I came into the office. That didn’t help and truthfully made my problem worse.

Went to my third urologist last July. My PSA was still a 5. February of this year my PSA jumped to 7.25 and they did the MRI where they found the issue.

My biopsy is next Thursday and I was accepted into the Brown Cancer Center in Louisville, KY. I meet with that team later in April. My only concern is looking through all the doctors profiles on the team none have prostate issues as their main focus.

I’m right now assuming with my age and no signs of spread that removal will be the recommendation. With my enlarged prostate issues causing me so much pain and affecting my daily life I’m thinking that might be the right direction.

Has anyone had experience with the Brown Cancer Center in Louisville, KY? Any other recommended paths?

I did submit for the “Color” genetics testing that was recommended on another post.

I’ve lived a good life and I’m not complaining. This is just part of life but I don’t want to leave my wife alone. That is my biggest concern.

@heavyphil

Believe it or not, North, I think the offensive word was ‘breast’!!
I posted once about the estradiol patch and I believe the word breast was in there, along with ‘post-menopausal’…when I hit the post button I received a message that my post was under review for violating community guidelines…WTF??
It did appear later, but I thought that was kinda weird. Maybe an older built in censor in the software?
Besides, @clandyboye1 ALWAYS says that phrase EDUCATE YOURSELF so I am not so sure that’s the reason.

@heavyphil, can you imagine if breast or menopause were violating words? Nothing would get posted in the breast cancer group. These are also words commonly used in the prostate cancer group. 🙂

While I'm sorry that one of your posts was sent for review before being published minutes later when our hard working moderating staff reviewed. Spammers and bots are constantly changing and our technical team works hard to stay one step ahead of them. Sometimes a perfectly good post gets picked up along the way and we have humans correcting the 0.1% of false positives. It's a small price to pay for keeping the trolls, advertisers and bots out of the community.

Your welcome 😉

Hi Colleen, I wondered the same thing, since my wife follows the osteoporosis forum and every other word is menopause😁
But it has also happened to me numerous times on Yahoo boards if I say something like “I hate when that happens!”
BINGO! The word hate brings in the censors. So was the advice to ‘educate yourself’ the offensive phrase? It IS true, isn’t it? I don’t think the poster was accusing anyone of being stupid, just not being well versed in this strange PCa world of acronyms and numbers.

Well that is over. Now the wait for diagnosis.

I had I think 18 (not sure exact number) biopsies take tranperinal. I had no pain afterward. I am not sure as don't remember if you had transrectal or transperinal. If you woke up in recover you probably had transpernial.

We are all different thus some of us have not pain or discomfort and some do.
Good luck on your diagnosis. Getting a Decipher score will really help determine options for treatments and/or no need for them.

I was diagnosed via the urine testing noted below.

Your going to live a long life, your not going to leave your wife alone just yet. I freaked out about the same issue but I am 75. My Gleason was 5-7 for years. Then jumped 11 and on day of surgery 15. We did all the test biopsy proved it was cancer. I also had enlarged prostate. So I opted to remove it and the lymph nodes. 3 months after I am < .O1. Removal brings about a few things for you to consider at your age. You will not be able to produce off spring , no testosterone, you will not get an erection. And you will wear diaper or pads for at-least 6 weeks. I am 5 months from RALP and still wear small pad during day. Some guys claim continence in 10 days ( I don’t believe them) some are 1 year. If you go for RALP do the keggles exercises before also after. Good luck and god bless.

You may have had to wear a diaper or pads for six weeks, I didn’t. After they pulled that catheter out, I had minimal leakage. It does happen to some of us.

I hope you meant those were your PSA numbers not your Gleason. What was your Gleason score?, Since you brought it up.

You can get an erection after surgery. If you read around in this form, you will find the number of people who’ve been able to get Erections. Some had nerve sparing and it worked, And they were able to get Erections, Some people had to wait months or even a year, but eventually worked for some of them. You can almost always get an erection using bimix or Trimix, It is not a lost cause.
