Spotting Following Cortisone Injection

Posted by toromama @toromama, Feb 19, 2021

Anyone else experienced spotting following a cortisone injection? This is my second experience. Both times it started about 10 days after the injection. Just wondering how long it usually lasts. The first time was a number of years ago and I thought it only lasted a few hours. I'm now on Day 2. I'm 61 years old and went through menopause when I was 52.

Waiting for results like that is so stressful. I hope you're able to get a trusted second opinion before deciding on surgery. I have same concerns about unknown side effects of steroid shots - these are the choices now?!

I had a cortisone 12 days prior the bleeding started and it has been pretty heavy, I am still waiting on the results from the pap and the biopsy, I am a mess waiting for the results.

Hi i can give you an update on my experience with the steroid shot . I had my shot in April 17 ,2025 . And exactly to the date May 16th i started to bleed . This is the 4th steroid shot i have had for my back and the bleeding has started exactly at the same time 16 or 17 days after the shot .
I have had all the biopsies ,ct scans ,D&C and all ok .This time only spotting and cramps and tired for a few days because my gynecologist and i are experimenting with estrogen creams to see if it makes a difference and finally it did .I am on 10mg of estrogen twice a week and will probably have to stay on it for the rest of my life if i want to continue with the shots .
I am 77 years old and the shot really makes a difference to my life . So I will probably continue with the shots as I get at least 6 months relief .
I know its a worry and i don’t know why more dr haven't heard of this but do your research thats what i did and you will feel better . Hope this helps .

Well I got my results back from the Biopsy and all was good, but the Dr still wants to do a d&C to still make sure not cancer, I am dreading it! Still spotting /bleeding about 4 weeks past shot now. I just hope they do not find anything in the Biopsy going to be done from the d&c. The doctor does not believe it has anything to do with she shot.

I have had knee injections three times in the past year. Within 7 to 10 days after each injection I have had a period. I am 68 and postmenopausal. I have had 2 hysteroscopies with D and C's. No sign of cancer. I am thinking this is a reaction to steroid injection. Any ideas? Any orthopedic doctors familiar with this? Mine said he had never heard of it.

Hi , i know its pretty scary but it has to do with the steroid shot .because its a hormone it interferes with the other hormones in your body . If you can find the post i wrote earlier it will tell you what i did . Basically my gynecologist put me on estrogen cream and pellets and it helped with the bleeding . I still get spotting when i have the shot but not as bad as a period it’s trade offs i guess .
The weird thing is I figured it out myself because non of the dr had heard of it either ! Hope that helps . 🇨🇦
