Reclast infusion

Posted by eead @eead, May 20 11:12am

I had the Reclast infusion at the end of February 2025. Since then I have had great pain in different parts of my body. I have gone from being a very active person (walking, gardening, exercising, etc.) to being unable to do most things. The pain is especially bad at night in my lower extremities, causing me to have difficulty sleeping. The pain management doctor wants me to have a spinal epidural for narrowing of the spinal and foramanal canals because the pain in my back, buttocks, thighs, and legs is so bad. Could the Reclast be causing some of this pain? If so, is there any way to reverse the Reclast?

I have rheumatoid arthritis and am in daily pain. My endocrinologist wants me to have Reclast for my osteoporosis. I’m terrified to take it. I can’t take any of the oral meds due to GERD. I’m thinking of just doing nothing as far as medication goes. Has anyone else not done medication for osteoporosis?

Yes and had same problem with gerd. I was put on a calcium cal ll. This rid me of the gerd and acid. I now take alage cal plus waiting to see how bone scan is in 4 months. I know since getting rid of germs process nutrients better. Was told by health care person acid affects your bones.

I'm happy to hear that your pain is finally subsiding some, and hope that it won't be too long before it's gone. Before this happened, I had no idea how bad pain could get and remain a constant problem. I was always able to continue with my life despite bouts of pain for various reasons. My heart really goes out to all the people who are suffering with pain.
I'm still really not sure why I'm having so much pain. My whole situation seems very strange and makes no sense to me. My pain starts when I go to bed, intensifying during the night, and by early morning I have to get out of bed because everything in the lower half of my body hurts so much. When I get up, I can barely walk because of the pain.
As the day goes on, and I'm more active, the pain lessens, so that by the evening I'm feeling almost back to normal, although the pain is still there.
The doctors say that the pains in my lower back, buttocks, hips, thighs, knees, and legs are all due to narrowing of my nerve and spinal canals and recommend I get two epidurals in my back.
Usually, people who have such lower back issues, have pain caused by walking and/or doing physical activities. My pain gets better after I do physical activities. I wish I could find a doctor who would really listen to me and look a little more deeply into my symptoms. It may be that my pain is caused by something other than my back, especially since my back issues were diagnosed several years ago. During that time, I was leading a full, active life, walking, exercising, doing all my own housework and gardening, traveling, etc. Now, it is difficult for me to do most things without the pain overcoming me.
I feel that the doctors are not really listening to me and maybe there is some other reason for why the pain is so excruciating at night and when I first get up. My hope is that, like you, the pain will gradually lessen so that I'm back to my "old" self.

Right after my infusion the pain was always worse at night and if I moved the slightest during my sleep, it would wake me right up; sometimes 3-4 times a night. We have a puppy that seems to wait to hear me make a noise and then uses her nose to nudge me so I will pet her. This! Would wake me instantly. We had a really bad weather day so I spent a good share of it watching television and just trying to catch up on a little sleep. By the end of the day, I could barely move my arms without severe pain, this made me realize more movement helped reduce the level of pain. 11 months now and I still feel the pain, not quite as intense but it is definitely still there and I try all the time to use my arms as much as possible and then just a little more to Hopefully assist in reducing the level of pain. I can relate to your nightly disruption to your sleep! Try to just go back to sleep and do not let it get you down. You are control not the pain. I know this sounds off the wall but it helps me daily. Yesterday I tried to start my push mower that just did not want to start, well, I kept pulling the cord until my arm was feeling really lame but I kept it up until the mower finally started with a little tinkering. The pain did not go completely away but in time , hopefully it will! I’ve already shared with endocrinology, no more treatment until we find out what is causing this “ Discomfort “! Good luck and stay positive!

I had my first and last reclast infusion last August. I want to find if others had the same reaction to the treatment as I did. 5 days after the infusion I developed terrible swelling in my joints, and could barely walk. I was in so much pain. The swelling only relented after a several days on a very powerful prescription anti-inflammatory med. I am still in pain daily, mostly in my hips and lower back. I have gained weight and am less inclined to exercise because it just hurts more. Has anyone else had this experience?

Not in my hips but both shoulders and my left foot, 11 months later and still quite sore! I have found the more I use my arm the less they hurt, but Always feeling very lame and sometimes I cannot walk on the left foot at all. I was just scheduled to go see a Rheumatologist, not until 01/29/2026 unless they have a cancellation! Long story short, as much as it hurts, I find the more active I am the less they hurt; maybe because my mind is more occupied with what I am doing and less on the pain. I did report this to FDA!

If you feel that you are suffering from these medications long term to report that to FDA.

There is a lot of information online on Reclast side effects- drugs.com, the FDA and Pfizer's own drug insert: https://labeling.pfizer.com/ShowLabeling.aspx?format=PDF&id=4676
In addition to the brief info below, Pfizer has a thorough chart with ev

Thank you for responding. Did you have extreme joint swelling around your affected joints at any point? The swelling in my knees, legs and one ankle was so drastic a few days after the infusion, I couldn't bend them at all. I was traveling away from home and had to return to see my doctor. It was frightening. Exercise does help now but getting up in the morning after lying down all night is very painful. I will report to the FDA. Again, thank you!

The insert link was for Zoledronic. Is that the same as 'reclast'?

What a weird drug! We're all so different in our reactions!

I have had 3 annual Reclast infusion and have never had any side affects. However, neither my primary physician or periodontal surgeon (had implant in Feb) want to be the person to ok a 4th year of ReClaxt due to a possible disintegration of my jaw without an Endocrinologist ok.

Any suggestions or advice? Thanks
