@jillyg - you will note I moved your post here to a place where a number of other members are talking about sigmoid colon resection for diverticulitis:
- Surgery - robotic sigmoid colon resection - diverticulitis https://connect.mayoclinic.org/discussion/surgery-robotic-sigmoid-colon-resection-diverticulitis/
That way, you can hear about thoughts and experiences from members such as @speedbird @linda82 @ppat4pr and others.
jillyg - are there any postsurgical issues you are particularly concerned about?
recovery time - It depends on you and how difficult the surgery was
bowel movements/elimination - It will be continually the first 5-6 weeks while healing,
anal leakage - This can be for a couple of mths. (buy pads in advance)
urination issues - I had none. Even though they had to call in a urologist during surgery to make sure my damage from so many episodes did not affect the ureters
ongoing pain - Pain was minimal. Stayed on Tylenol, Advil and a muscle relaxer for the first week. I would say just discomfort.
nausea - None
I had bowel resection 4.5 months ago. Recovery time was seemed to improve weekly and by 6 weeks I felt pretty good. I didn’t need strong pain medication after the first week or so.
I did not have problems with urinating or with anal leakage. I was not ever really nauseous.
Bowel movements are somewhat back to normal although I still have some issues of being able to feel like I’m done for the day. Also I’m struggling a bit with what foods I can digest well. For example I ordered a big salad for lunch a few weeks ago and had diarrhea all the next day. So I’m slowly easing back into the high fiber food.
My surgery was robotic so less invasive which I’m sure meant less problems.
I’m quite happy to not have the constant left side pain and frequent trips to the ER when I had flare ups.
I had a resection in 2021 after having an ileostomy for two and a half years. Do not eat spicy fibrous foods to start. Small meals and immodium if needed. A Cheesesteak Hoagie with hot peppers was a poor choice on my part. You will gradually find a normal. Good luck and don't worry!
