Long COVID strange symptom: Feels like a sprained ankle?

Posted by kentkemmerling1949 @kentkemmerling1949, May 25 11:14am

I am not sure this is Long COVID related. I have had LC for over 5 years and this has just started a few months ago. But about once every 3 or 4 weeks, I wake up with what feels like a sprained ankle. It is so painful that I can hardly walk. I am already using a walker due to balance and dizziness problems, so this ankle thing just makes it much worse. It usually lasts 3 - 4 days, then is gone until the next time. Has anyone else experienced this crazy problem? If so, what do you do about it? I went to my GP and they had no idea what causes it.

I also have neuropathy in my left foot. I never thought about it being related to COVID, but maybe. I took over 20 IvIg infusions for the neuropathy and maybe it helped a bit, but not much.

One of my symptoms is very stiff joints. I woke up one morning where my foot felt like I had injured it. I limped around for a while, but it went away by the end of the day. I think mine had something to do with histamine intolerance.

LC 4 1/2 years 9/2020
Now that you mention it, yes, I do get periodic aching pain in my wrists. Can't grip anything for the intensity of the pain. Usually is only for the day. I have so much other daily LC stuff going on, this is lower on my radar. Since it is periodic, I fall prey to brain fog and forget it's even a thing for me until the next time when I try to remember what I could have done to cause the pain. Kinda like finding a bruise and trying to figure out what I bumped into for it to appear. Describing it as a sprain is very accurate in the way it feels. I can see how it can hinder your mobility. I'm so sorry you have to deal with it.

I still get extreme pain in my two toes that turned purple during my seige with COVID. The general theory is that I have microclots in the toes or inflammation of the small blood vessels. I also can get extreme pain in my knees early in the morning that can wake me up...sometimes my shoulders will hurt as well as my neck. I think it all goes back to inflammation. I am taking Celebrex twice a day but it does not help much. Watching my diet and staying away from inflammatory foods does help...but once in a while a girl really needs a piece of bread!

I also developed neuropathy in my lower left leg and foot. I also have what I would term, heavy leg syndrome. I have to lift my right leg to get into my car. I am starting rehab this week, and going to a gym. I am saddened by this. It's difficult to walk any distance and my balance has been affected. These are the things that have happened since I fist had LC in April of 2020.

This sounds like nerves flaring. Covid is known to affect the nervous system. Do you have diabetes or any vascular issues in your legs/calves/feet?

You may want to see a neurologist for testing. You may have small fiber neuropathy and there is a skin punch biopsy that can confirm. There is no cure for this but there are medications and supplements/topical nerve creams that can help with symptoms.

I have small fiber neuropathy and it causes issues in legs/glfeet at night. I take alpha Lipoic acid, Acetyl l carnitine and magnesium supplements which helps calm my small nerve fibers. Salonpas makes lidocaine nerve pain patches that can help relieve pain temporarily. Compression socks can help, too.
