Sore breast, side and armpit months after treatment

Posted by minkky @minkky, 6 days ago

Probably a silly question. A few weeks ago I started experiencing heavy soreness on my right breast and side where I had my cancer diagnosis. This happens when laying down in bed at night. It has been 3 months since I finished radiation and 5 months since lumpectomy surgery. It helps if I would do arm stretching in the morning. I discovered wearing a sports bra at night has helped a lot. Anyone have this happen and need to sleep in a bra?

Yes, I have the same pain. I had my surgery in October, 2024 and finished radiation early Jan. 2025 (after a nasty infection of my incisions...I had a lift and reduction along with the lumpectomy...regretful decision). Anyway, I have lots of pain in the incision area, under the treated breast but everywhere in the breast, as well. I notice it the most when I turn in bed or after a day of wearing a bra. My bra has soft material and no wire. I'm tired of dealing with pain and discomfort. I'm going to buy some silicon gel today and try that. Sorry you're dealing with this too.

Yes I had the same thing happen to me. My surgery was Nov 2023 radiation was completed in Jan 2024. I had 23 treatments done to my right. They removed 3 nodes and lumpectomy was done also. It’s tight all the time. I do stretches and wear a sports bra to sleep in as well. My doctor told me it’s still going to be sore because the inside is still healing from the surgery and radiation. Hope this helps.

I had cancer 2016 and finished radiation 2017. My arm and underarm still bother me. Sorry you all are going through this. CBD roll on really helps me.

It's weird because it started weeks after radiation. I actually feel better wearing the bra all the time. It's a soft, lightweight, no wire sports bra. Thanks for the reply. It's nice to know I'm not alone with this. But, I hope you find something that helps.

Thanks for your reply. It helps to know I'm not the only one. I'll be seeing my oncology nurse practitioner on Monday. I'll see what she says.

Are your mammograms eally painful? I'll have my first one since diagnosis in August.

I had 2 lumpectomies (Aug & Sept 2024), then radiation (Nov 2024). I'm now taking anastrozole and Kisqali (ribociclib). In late May 2025, I started to have significant pain on right side (same side as breast that had the cancer) under my ribs. I thought it was gallbladder related. Upper abdominal ultrasound showed no stones, sand, sludge. Now I'm wondering if the pain is a delayed side effect of either the radiation or the surgery. I've read that radiation can cause fibrous tissue in the breast to contract. I also have mild scoliosis. That can also cause back & rib pain/ discomfort.

I had a mastectomy and reconstruction (implant) about seven years ago. The plastic surgeon told me to always sleep in a sports bra in order to keep the implant in place. I have a friend who had to have her's replaced because it somehow folded in on itself. I'm not sure if this is a common recommendation, but I have been sleeping in a sports bra ever since, with no complications.

yes.. actually any bra causes me irritation. I had 20 lymph nodes removed but timing for surgery is almost like yours. Had surgery in January, radiation in March.. chemo was sept until nov. last year..
I go to PpT for lymphedema.. i didn’t have swelling in my arm but cording. It still hurts, armpit is sore.. breast itches all the time.. random pain in breast and apparently some fluid. Have been doing exercises and lymphatic draining massages since march..
I do put a sports bra on occasionally. They are looking into some compression garment for my chest .. comes down a little longer than a bra does..
