anyone else waiting?

after a recent diagnosis of osteoporosis, I am 65, I have decided to hold off on taking any RX medication. My blood work for calcium level came back normal. So apparently I have calcium but my bones aren't absorbing it. I want to know why. I have started taking Vitamin D3 to help with absorption. Anyone else in the same boat?

Seriously how can you do prunes? LOL! I’ve really been trying but my “system” hates them. I buy the good, organic ones with no sorbital. I have not been able to do more than three a day and even that causes mayhem!

drink prume juice.

Take vitamin K2. D3 helps your body absorb calcium. K2 helps get that calcium to the bones.

D3 is absorbed better when taken with food, especially if there's fat in the food. Or you can go for a walk in the sunshine. 🙂

Are we twins? I’m also 65. Diagnosed in November. I just had a consultation with my endo and she was OK with my taking my time to decide my treatment. I will repeat my DEXA after one year of eating well (I was a snacker before: lots of chips, fries etc. I have a naturally thin frame so I could eat junk - and I did LOL), seeing a personal trainer for weight training, and taking supplements. If I hold I’ll continue as I am. If I decline I’ll do one year of evenity or tymlos followed by fosamax. I’m already very active: I run, walk, do HIIT classes but have ramped it up. My endo didn’t look at me like I was nuts in the head - she has a lot of patients who need time. She said if I was a lot older/less fit she’d be more insistent on meds.

Please keep us posted. I tried Tymlos or 3 months. Terrible headaches for the first 2 weeks, then got past that only to have severe leg cramps and overall not feel great. I was going to try another but feel so much better without medication that I can't bring myself to go back on anything. I am vigilant about the treadmill as well as use small weights, and try to eat mostly healthy food. I'm with you, if I have stayed about the same, I'll continue without meds.

As we age, the body's ability to absorb calcium lessens due to less intestinal absorption, loss of estrogen and Vit D deficiencies. That is one reason you may have enough calcium but your body can't use it as well.

Very interested in learning more about osteoporosis! How to protect the bones in my body from breaking. Already have had two breaks -- both in my foot.

Is there a source of estrogen available at my age, 80.

With the bad possible side effects of drugs used to treat osteoporosis, I believe this is a wise choice.

So feeling like you are making a good/ the right decision is so difficult with this disease. It’s very individual and there is not much guidance- not really enough data for me to feel satisfied. I am 70 and have lived a very active life, lifted weights, climbed masts, done very heavy work. I was widowed in 2023, live alone, work as an RN case manager/health educator with my own business. I was diagnosed with osteoporosis about 18 months ago, after asking for an dexascan before I was starting CrossFit. I declined treatment with the agreement of MD and decided no CrossFit. I had lifted 35# sandbags to be ready for hurricane, worked my 1/2 acre but then broke T8 6 months ago deadlifting my 50# lab. I then decided to try medication. I started with evenity and had an immediate allergic reaction. Then I went to Tymlos. I did have a heart rate of 117 with Tymlos and went to a reduced dosage then an allergic reaction with a rash and intense itching. Both made me feel nauseated, fatigued, headache, and very lightheaded. Over the 2 months of medication I had difficulty walking my dog and missed a couple of important moment in the lives of friends. It was challenging to work. I wasn’t sure if it was going to be feasible to continue and hoped the side effects would subside. Instead I had the allergic reactions and it was decided not to continue with meds. I have to trust what my body is telling me. The goal is to maintain my current numbers. I have asked the MD about the additional tests I have found on this site and am waiting for an answer. I am on the program OsteoProFitness (online) and will continue all the other things I do. This program is based on research and is done by a PT-developed for her mom with Osteo. I have a lot of experience with weight training over the years and had another PT review it also. So it’s a good fit for me. I think it’s important to take some time and really think about your decisions, make sure you have as much information as possible. I have really appreciated having this site, the information and everyone’s experiences and kindness. I hope this helps you too!

Hello @maziefd, @maryandnans, @nannygoat5, and @ramnw - There are many discussions on Connect about dealing with side-effects of osteoporosis medications as there are only a few options available and the fact they are powerful medications. It can be easy to get lost in the negative reactions to these powerful medications as we don't always post our good experiences when we have them.

I thought you may find the following discussions a good balance from members who were/are in your same shoes but ultimately chose medication with positive results:

Mayhem? As in diarrhea? I have never had an side effect from prunes, but we are all different.
