Itching 58 yr old male

Posted by deeloynd @deeloynd, May 27 10:46pm

My husband has had severe itching for the last four months. It’s on his arms, chest and back. He had blood work that came back with everything perfect. He has tried allergy medication, dermatology prescribed lotion and nothing seems to stop the itching. We stopped the intake of sugar, fast food and gluten. We did NOT change, laundry soap, perfumes, shampoo, body wash, or medication. The itching gets worse when he is laying down at night ready to go to sleep. The sheets get washed weekly and the bed has been examined thoroughly. He is a 58 year old Caucasian male. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Hey There! That has got to be miserable. Here are a few ideas:

1) Has he been on an antihistamine? Coming off some of the antihistamines can cause severe itching.
2) Does he have Thyroid Disease? I find that some of the Thyroid Medications can cause severe itching.
3) Is his skin extremely dry? This can cause severe itching and I use Cetaphil cream for this.
4) Have you tried Aveeno oatmeal soaks? These can be bought online or at Walmart. I think it's about 4-6
packets in a box. I used these years ago when my son had chicken pox and let him soak in the tub with a
pocket poured in and it helped with itching.
5) I had severe hives one time and Corn Huskers Lotion was wonderful and calmed them down. This is
an old remedy, but, it certainly worked for me. Some of the "older mom & pop" drug stores still carry this.
6) Did Dermatologist recommend Hydrocortisone OINTMENT, not the cream. The Ointment works much
better and is by prescription.

Praying for him and you. This has got to be miserable. Blessings & Prayers....

My husband developed constant serious itching along with facial flushing. Diagnosed as a neuroendocrine tumor. Tumor never located even at Mayo but blood work confirmed it. He has taken Claritin twice a day for over 16 years to control itching.

I’m hoping that you have seen the dermatologist in person and not an assistant. Did the doctor go over the blood tests and do you have access to
lab results? The itch can be due to internal causes or any medication or
or OTC supplement.

Did he have a biopsy? Does he have rough skin ? Is there every a burning sensation of the skin. Did he spend a lot of time in the sun or does he still?

Look up Grovers disease and see if anything you read about that condition applies to your husband.
Good luck.

Is his skin dry. It could be dry skin. Or there is something he is putting on. These companies are always making changes to what they use read labels.
My x broke out in hives from corn pollen. The cream they gave him to use I broke out in hives from.
Did you go to an allergy doctor.

Itch can be a form of neuropathy. For me it is triggered by change in temperature, even a slight change…showering is a big trigger….
There is a fb group for water induced itch…(Aquagenic Pruritus is the medical term) …someone discovered that if they took a preworkout supplement, they didn’t itch and isolated it to BETA ALANINE. I have been taking BA for 7 plus years and it works…I buy the NOW brand on Amazon, 750 mg capsule, one every four hours as needed…here is a link to a Cleveland Clinic page…

P.S. Sometimes a doctor will prescribe a prednisone taper for itching such as a bad case of poison ivy. It is
also given for inflammation issues. Just a thought. Praying much for relief.....blessings...

I went through this and years later found put it was systemic shingles. I had had recurring shingles but I nor my local doctors realized I was having internal shingles manifesting in this incredible itching in my arms. The incredible itching was my only symptom at the time. I would even put my arms in ice water baths. Later when I started have really horrible nerve pain down my right arm into my right hand, Mayo Clinic said it had been shingles.

I have now been on valacyclovir for 8 years and am again having shingles outbreaks, last week it was on my skull. I have had shingles all over my body- both sides. It doesn’t follow the usual rules. Just my particular immune system. This time my skull was itchy and scaly but didn’t hurt and I couldn’t see it, so I didn’t realize I had shingles until the hematologist pointed it out.

Symptoms are similar to mine--(which I believe is Grover's disease) and I find relief from OTC Witch Hazel; applied generously and has no side effects. Inexpensive and worth a try!
