What construction will affect my visit at Mayo Rochester?

Posted by Laurie, Volunteer Mentor @roch, Oct 27, 2024

If you have future plans to visit Mayo Rochester, you should be aware there are many construction projects planned for next few years. Some affect street closures and parking. You should allow for additional time to arrive and park prior to your appointment.

Mayo Rochester has created a webpage to keep visitors up to date.
https://www.mayoclinic.org/rochester-construction
This is part of Rochester Mayo's Bold Forward Unbound project, new buildings and new parking, If interested, here is flyer about initiative:

Laurie, thank you for this great posting. As a ‘frequent flyer’ to Mayo-Rochester this is really helpful for future visits. Exciting times ahead for the Mother Ship! ☺️

Wow! And I heard there might be 10 more floors on Gonda at some point for patients with high end living & increased security needs? We just left Mayo, and there were a few lanes where traffic merged. It just means additional time for the traffic, no getting lost. I heard later there may be more shuttles when the parking lots are done? If you go to Graham parking ramp, seems obvious, but remember to go to the lowest level SL (subway level) to get to the tunnel. When we were there, the elevator was not working on a different level, 5:30 a.m.

@roch. Thank you for posting these updates in construction and plans to Mayo's Rochester campus. We will be there in November.

East entrance of Mayo and Gonda Buildings will close starting April 12.
For anyone visiting Rochester this year, you will notice construction around Mayo and downtown Rochester. For Mayo, this is part of Mayo's Bold Forward Unbound project, new buildings and new parking,

The planned demolition and other construction results in street and entrance changes. If you normally enter Mayo at street level at east entrance (by Kahler hotel) you will notice changes starting April 12. See this announcement for more info:
https://www.mayoclinic.org/rochester-construction/mayo-gonda-east-entrance-closure
In addition, the city of Rochester has multiple construction projects affecting north Broadway. The city also has a construction information at this site:
https://www.downtownrochesterconstruction.org/
When arriving to Mayo's downtown campus, please allow extra time due to construction.

Being both a Connect mentor and a patient at Mayo Rochester, I encountered all the construction confusion yesterday that every visitor encounters. I thought I knew my way around downtown, but seems like every other street is closed. And it will get worse over next few months.

Please visit Mayo Construction page for updates prior to your visit and plan ahead. If you're driving to your appointment, it will take longer to get downtown and park.

The next big change will be closure of 2nd Street SW (the road that runs in front of St Mary's hospital). Mayo construction page has more information on dates and location of closures.

Rochester closure of 2nd Street SW.
Another major impact to traffic in downtown Rochester started Tuesday, May 13. 2nd St SW will be closed to through traffic (all lanes, each direction) between 6th Ave SW and 4th Ave SW to make way for the construction of a tunnel providing nearby access from the new clinical building to a future Rochester Public Transit station. 2nd street is the road that goes from St Mary's hospital to Mayo's downtown campus.

The following website shows additional details and maps of effected roads.
https://www.mayoclinic.org/rochester-construction/2nd-st-sw-closure
If driving to your appointment at Mayo's downtown campus, please plan ahead to allow additional time due to detours.

The Nov 13, 2024 posting titled "Nov 2024 Update" was 6 months ago. Is it still true, that the Charlton valet parking entrance is closed? All the current maps show that as open. (Mu surgery is next Wednesday.) If it's closed, what's the valet alternative near Charlton/Methodist? None of the current maps show anything at the Jacobsen building.

I had appointments at Mayo Clinic in Rochester last week. Like @roch I thought I knew my way around but the construction is massive and the detours are many. Once we parked our car at the hotel (TownPlace Suites) we decided not to drive again until our day of departure. I walked from the hotel to Mayo Clinic the first day of my appointments and even that was a maze. The second day of appointments I took the shuttle from the hotel to and from Mayo Clinic. I like to walk downtown. There are plentiful detour signs for cars but none for walking.

I don't know if the Charlton valet parking is closed. The nearest would be the Gonda valet parking. That was open when we were at Mayo Clinic last week.

Do you live in or near Rochester so this is why you are driving to Mayo? If you are staying in a hotel then I recommend a shuttle.
