Primary Small Bowel NETS, Liver Mets

Posted by fraaseo @fraaseo, May 14, 2025

I’ve included a photo of my liver Mets in case others are interested in what it actually looks like. Photo was taken by NETS surgeon prior to removal. Keep in mind it is magnified & many of the spots are no larger than the head of an ink pen.

Dr was unable to get a clear view with the CT so he ordered a GA68 PET scan fusion. That allowed the Dr & Tumor Board to see (electronically) the best combined views of both the previous CT & PET scan. Interestingly enough the liver tumors did NOT light up on PET scan; it wasn’t until the Cytoreductive/debulking surgery he found all the tumors & ended up removing a triangle section (one-third) of the liver.

I don’t want to scare you, but it was painful 5 hour surgery. I was hospitalized x 4 days & demanded to go home on day 5; you get very little sleep in the hospital. I was on so much pain medication I remember nothing about being in the hospital. I took the pain pills for 4 days once I got home, then switched to Tylenol, I have a high pain tolerance & don’t like taking pain pills & was tired of sleeping. I had 44 staples & those caused a lot of discomfort.
After about 6 weeks I felt much better. Here’s a list of all the NETS cancer/locations that was removed:
A Peritoneum, pre-peritoneal fat
B Abdomen, left anterior abdominal wall, trocar site
C Abdomen, right anterior abdominal wall, trocar site
D Falciform ligament
E Liver, portion of right lobe of liver
F Liver, porta hepatis nodule
G Gallbladder
H Diaphragm, portion of right diaphragm and peritoneum
I Diaphragm, right diaphragm peritoneum medially
J Peritoneum, right gutter peritoneum
K Peritoneum, right lower peritoneum
L Bladder, portion of bladder peritoneum
M Peritoneum, left gutter peritoneum
N Peritoneum, left lower peritoneum
O Abdomen, sigmoid epliploica
P Pelvis, left pelvic peritoneum
Q Omentum, omentum nodules
R Sigmoid colon, wedge sigmoid colon
S Small intestine, small bowel mesentery
T Appendix
U Small intestine, small bowel lipoma
V Ileum, portion of mesentaric tumor and terminal ileum

Hi I had surgery in Australia in a regional town 3 years ago had 1.5m of ileum removed and 10 lymph nodes removed. My surgeon used fine tubes under my skin which gave pain relief every 4 hours for 3 days. I also had stitches that dissolve as well. pain level once tubes removed was around 5 out of 10. Was not allowed home until I did a bowel motion which for me happened day 6 at night and went home the next day. Follow up 2 weeks later. I now have liver lesions in which my medical team are monitoring. Surgery time was 4.5 hours and I do not remember being transferred from recovery to room. good luck.

@stevestenburg31: You have been given good advise to ask for a MRI scan. I would add: ask that MRI be “with and without EVOIST contrast”.
I have experienced best test results using this type contrast to reveal best info on my NET Liver metastases condition. This will provide your NET Cancer Specialist the information to recommend best treatment. Best health to you…

That is what my doc orders for my liver tumors and they show clearly.

Interesting! I have several in my liver also.

I have been told I wouldn't get the once a month shot until one gets to be 1 inch. No talk about removal. Slow growing.

@amygirl
I had Histotripsy which was excellent for small tumors in the liver. They never returned.

I'll look that up. Never heard of it.

@ricki8: I would love to learn about your Histotripsy procedure for Liver Mets, since I have multiple liver Mets from my sm. Intestine NET primary.
What size tumors were done?
Where was Histotripsy performed?
How long ago was procedure?
Recovery time & side effects?
Thanks for sharing with your peer NET patients. Bette. dbamos1945

Please could you tell me where you got the Histotripsy done. I had a right haemocolectomy due to Grade 1 stage 4 NETS last year. The lymph nodes were clear but there is metastases in the liver. They decided not to do anything but I need to get the triple phase MRI done every 4 months. So far all good
