Loosening of hip after a total hip replacement
I’m 30 years old, and a year ago I had a total hip replacement. I wanted to share my experience since then — it hasn’t gone the way I hoped, and I’m looking for support or anyone who’s been through something similar.
Ever since the surgery, I’ve had groin pain that just never went away. I did physical therapy for 6 months with no real improvement.
My doctor referred me for an injection to see if that would help — but unfortunately, it didn’t. The pain stayed the same.
After that, I had an MRI. It showed “edema tracking in the iliopsoas muscle and into the musculotendinous junction and proximal tendon.” Based on that, my doctor thought I might need an iliopsoas tendon lengthening surgery and referred me to a different specialist.
That doctor agreed it might help — but before jumping to surgery, we tried another injection and also ran blood work and a bone scan to rule out other issues. The bone scan came back showing signs that the prosthetic might be loosening — which was honestly devastating to hear. Now, my doctor is consulting with other orthopedic surgeons. He believes I may need another surgery to replace the socket. Hearing that just one year after my first surgery… I was heartbroken. I feel lost and unsure of what to do — I really just don’t want to live in constant pain. The pain has gotten worse and now radiates down to my knee. I’m still waiting on the next steps, but I’m sharing this in case anyone has been through something similar. If you’ve had complications after a hip replacement, or dealt with iliopsoas issues or a loose prosthesis — I’d love to hear your story. Right now I just need some guidance and hope.
Thanks for reading. It’s hard to be so open, but if this thread can connect me to someone else out there in the same boat, it’s worth it. 💙

Hopefully, no more hip surgeries here! I’m in Vermont!
There are great university medical centers on the east coast too!
I had hip replacement 6 years ago. Then this past summer my leg in the front would hurt a lot then in November my hip started squeaking, like a squeak toy. I ended up 3 days later having revision hip surgery. My plastic liner inside the cup had broken apart and the femur head was scraping the cup. This surgery seems harder to recoup from and hurt a lot. But it’s all good now. I hope all goes good for you and the pain goes away.
Wow what a story Danny, thanks for sharing. It certainly is a story of perseverance in the presence of, what - medical indifference at best, medical malpractice at worst?
I completely agree that if you find yourself in a situation that can't be explained by your current medical team - find another. There are great doctors out there, and some not so great.
I hope your wife, and you, are better. Thanks for sharing your story - as a lesson for people going through something similar, or as a lesson on second-opinions and pre-op research.
FWIW - I look for doctors/surgeons in their mid 30s to early 40s, with a solid pedigree from a medical college and/or residency, and solid referrals. My knee and hip surgeon got his degree from LSU and did his residency at Cleveland Clinic. The acceptance place at both institutions is around 3%.
Thanks again Danny, and all the best to you and your wife.

1 ReactionWow I'm glad you got your hip fixed Skipper. Once that plastic liner is damaged, the metal ball of the femur can be in contact with the metal cup on the pelvis. That can lead to metal getting into your system, not a good thing.
Thanks for sharing your experience. It is never too soon to see a Dr if you suspect something need to be addressed/fixed.
I'm so glad you're better now.

3 ReactionsWe are in Vermont and my wife went to Dartmouth Hitchcock in New Hampshire for all surgeries yet with two different surgeons. Dartmouth itself is a teach faculty! After having Total Bilateral hip replacement my wife had complications from compressed nerve and fractured pelvic on the opposite side and was Black & Blue from head to toe, all over her body which generated the need for my wife to inquire if she had been dropped off the table during her surgery. And, once surgery was over, the surgeon informed me that all went well and I would be able to see her in 15 minutes; over 5 hours later I demanded that someone come and get me from the waiting room so I could see my wife. About 1.5 hours later we were United with zero explanation for the length of time.
Be your own advocate! No one took any responsibility for all that has happened to my wife! Even rehab Dr omitted things that lead to my wife getting dropped on the shower floor and then lying to me as to what happen, because I was there and witnessed the whole thing, yet they told me that they called me at home once they were able to retrieve her off the floor, when it was “I” that retrieved her from the floor!
sounds like you have grounds for a lawsuit. I was black and blue from my first hip surgery. It was horrible. But it was just the way it was. No foul on the drs part.
thank God you can advocate for your wife. My dog does little to help. 😉
One would have thought that there were grounds. However, all the doctors cover for each other to avoid costly malpractice insurance. There were notes in my wife’s file expressing that she had experienced multiple falls at the hospital, rehab and at home which were all false but due to not taking pictures almost daily at each location, one always covered the other; even mentioned knee or elbow surgery when it was just hips. They, the surgeon and Rehab doctor have to live with what they did wrong! I was just glad she was able to eventually go home and recover to the best of her ability; will never be 100% ever again. However, she is not bed ridden and the Cobalt /chromium poison and staph infections she acquired did not help either.
Again, I am terribly sorry. I had one surgeon who got mad at me and wouldn’t do my surgery that was completely approved by the insurance company. I was very lucky as years later I found out that the surgeon who did do my lumbar surgery did all of the guys revisions. He was eventually sued for negligence and it was available on the Internet. You can always go review online the doctors and the establishment and give them the review. You think they deserve and make other people aware. Good luck.
Surgery is a funny activity. In general, IMO, one gets better care from a teaching facility than from a random internist. If one has a difficult diagnosis, going to the Mayo Clinic, Cleveland Clinic, Massachusetts General, etc. is a good idea. However, based on my research, the overall level of skill and performance in surgery at these facilities is excellent but there are better individuals outside of these groups if you know what you need.
I am convinced that my hip and knee surgeon (Jimmy Chow) is better than anyone at Mayo or Cleveland and I would say the same thing for my neurosurgeon (Luis Tumialan). But I did a lot of research and sometimes waiting for me to select them and for them to become available.
I have had considerable pain for months from my bad right knee but I was willing to wait to get on Dr. Chow's surgery schedule. The old saying does apply: if you want excellence in medicine, don't go to someone who doesn't have a waiting list.
