Looking for options for seeing an endocrinologist

Posted by staylorrn2000 @staylorrn2000, May 6 7:41pm

I called Mayo requesting an appointment with an Endocrinologist . They asked me what for. I said I have adrenal insufficiency from being on Prednisone. I was told someone would contact me to schedule an appointment. Today I received a letter saying the following:

“We appreciate the confidence you have expressed in Mayo Clinic and thank you for your recent request.
There is nothing more important than your health for you and your family. Each day we receive many more appointment requests than we are able to accommodate. The Division of Endocrinology in Rochester, Minnesota has reviewed your information to determine if we can add further value or treatment options to your care. Unfortunately, we are unable to offer you an appointment at this time.
Please know we do not make this decision lightly. If your health situation changes, we would appreciate another opportunity to evaluate whether our services can complement those provided by your current provider.
Thank you for considering Mayo Clinic for your health care needs. We encourage you to follow up with your local provider .
Sincerely,
Division of Endocrinology in Rochester, Minnesota”

I was shocked to receive this response, mainly because what information did they review given the only information they had about me was my one statement that I have adrenal insufficiency in response to the one question asked of me.
Has anyone else been turned away from receiving even a consult at Mayo?

@staylorrn2000 , how are you doing? Are you still trying to get into Mayo or pursuing something else?

Good. So glad you have another option.

I had a similar situation.

I have exhausted all local and state options.

I could tell from the questions the person I spoke with that this was going nowhere.

I then received a survey asking what was wrong etc. to be seen by Mayo.

Very limited character space, yet details wanted by Mayo (which is impossible when you are limited to 50 characters, AND they “wanted” me for multiple departments).

Knew it was an absolute crapshoot - mayo did not want to deal with me based on personal and electronic interaction.

Almost immediately received an electronic rejection, saying deal with local options (of which I have none/exhausted, per the phone call!).

Absolute joke.

@nnaise, if travel is not a barrier, you can submit your request to a different Mayo Clinic location. You might ask your doctor to submit a physician referral.

Can I help connect you with others? See all support groups here: https://connect.mayoclinic.org/groups/

Well, this is frustrating @nnaise.

Do you mind sharing more about what brought you here? What would help you the most right now?

@staylorrn2000, if travel is a barrier, you may have a closer facility near you that is connected to the Mayo Clinic Care Network.

The Mayo Clinic Care Network is a select group of independent health systems that are granted special access to Mayo Clinic's extensive knowledge and world-leading medical expertise. The Mayo Clinic Care Network helps keep care local by providing guidance and answers to many questions that might otherwise require a referral to a specialist. See the member hospitals here:
