Has Algeacal been researched by Mayo Clinic or by any patient?

The only clinical trials I could find were done by the company that makes it and they were very low quality. That doesn't mean it doesn't work it just means there is no real evidence that it does. There is better evidence for K-2, which is much more affordable. This is not definitive but worth checking out and asking your doctor. https://www.frontiersin.org/journals/public-health/articles/10.3389/fpubh.2022.979649/full

I have tried Algae Cal for 3 years and my bone density did not improve al all. In fact it got a little worse. I have been hearing more about K-2 and will be giving that a try.

They recommend k2 and D3 with the calcium. I am also trying strontium but haven't taken it long enough to know if it helps.

I've read that AlgaeCal isn't any better than other supplements. I decided after researching trails/studies online to save my money. Right now I use BoneUp by Jarrow. The best way to get calcium into bone is your diet.

@tmknight Same with me. Looking for alternatives, especially since I read a new study that clams taking calcium can be a problem. I know Algae Cal claims a different type of calcium, but apparently all form of calcium supplements were associated with higher risk of heart issues in older women who had been on supplements . I have been doing weight bearing exercises and have always been very active with hiking and gardening. Frankly I was surprised that my Dexa showed osteoporosis. I don't think my daily dose of Synthroid helps either.

@tmknight That's disappointing to hear and I'm so sorry it didn't give you results. I was going to consider taking it for a plant-based form of calcium.

Are you also exercising to increase muscle and stimulate bone growth, to further support your goals?

I am also taking Vitamin K-2 along with Vitamin D, to help direct any calcium to the bones and away from the arteries! I wish you all the best.

@lilac2025 Yes, I am doing some weights but I have to be careful since I had a severe L1 burst fracture a year and a half ago. I got a book recommended by others called “Exercises for Better Bones” by Margaret Martin, which was written for people with osteoporosis. I also started taking K-2 along with Vit. D, and started a liquid form of calcium. My Dr. does have me on Evenity so I will find out any results next March when I do my next DEXA scan. Hoping for some improvement.

I recently started the AlgaeCal Bone Builder pack (calcium and strontium) plus their Vit D3, but haven't taken a follow on DEXA yet. Some friends like the calcium from New Chapter which is sold at Whole Foods (goes on sale from time to time) and I think also online (there might be a Black Friday sale); it's plant-based too, I believe.

@blueberre is it possible that your dosage of synthroid can be adjusted…my doc has kept mine quite low in recent years (even has me split a pill so I get 1/2 dose 2x a week) and thyroid levels are fine…sometimes the dose we start on is too high as we age…? all a big question as I am not a doctor ! There are different forms of calcium, another area to explore- some may be better absorbed, easier on the gut. It gets complicated if someone is taking a lot of meds…good luck to all !!
