Does skin recover after prednisone?
I have been on a taper for a couple of months - now at 12.5 mg, down from 20 mg. Skin on my hands and forearms is noticeably thin - so much so that I feel like an anatomy specimen. Also, blood vessels break at the smallest bump or abrasion. Is there hope for some recovery from this, or can I expect to have this constant bruising from now on?

I was on Prednisone for 18 mths, skin was tearing very easily and taking longer than usual to heal. Diligent wound care is very important. Skin started to improve when I got down to very low numbers (2mg per week and lower). Off it now and skin is pretty much back to normal, can do garden work without long sleeves, skin scratches rather than tearing, a lot less bruising. There is life after Prednisone! The muscles and tendons are another matter, even though the PMR is clearly in remission, I would say I only have about 2/3 of my pre PMR strength and flexibility. My exercise tolerance is way lower and risk of falls is much higher. Need to focus on exercises for strength and stability.
I have been dealing with the purple bruises for 8 1/2 years because I take a blood thinner for my a-fib. Was diagnosed in October 20 24 with PMR and placed on prednisone. The bruising got significantly worse and then my skin became very thin and easily tore. I appreciate all of the other post with the good ideas for dealing with this side effect. I have learned that the use of Arnica roll-on gel that is used for arthritis pain helps the purple spots to disappear more quickly. I recently discovered that Bert’s Bees Mama Belly Butter for pregnant women really helps my dry thin skin. I have been using it for about three weeks and my skin tears have been reduced significantly. Finding this support group Has helped me realize that I’m not alone in dealing with the effects of PMR.
